Cool Kw ... HP ... KW at wheels ?????

Hi All

Was wondering if someone can clear something up for me.
Had my car dynod and it came out at 137 kw ... now I know this
can't be engine power output cos it starts at 160 kw

Is there a calculation to work out how u get from one to the other.
I think one is called kw at flywheel and the other at the wheels .. ?? not sure

Then how do you work out KW to HP is it a factor of 1.338 ???

Do all dynos measure power at the flywheel ... ie the lower amount ??

Any help is much appreciated ... thanks (H)

Some dynos mesure kw/hp at the wheels, some at flywheel. Depends on brand and the dynotesters settings.
In your case you mesured 137kw and that spuld be at the wheels.
I use 1kw = 1.36hp
About 10-15% is a drivetrain loss in 4wd cars

160kw is manufactures in engine power.
160 x 1.36 = 218 hp engine power
137 x 1.36 = 186hp at the wheels
Any help?

isn't it more like 25-30% loss? 10-15 sounds way too low - more like FWD loss.

^ Most of what he said, but

1kW = 1.341hp
1hp = 0.7457kW
1PS = 0.986hp - Pferdenstarke, or "Horse power", the metric version of hp
1hp = 1.014PS
1PS = 0.7353kW
1kW = 1.360PS - hence dan_swede's conversion factor above.

1hp = power required to raise 550lb vertically through 1 foot in 1 second
1PS = power required to raise 75kg vertically through 1 metre in 1 second

SO...

160 engine kW = 214.5 engine hp = 217.6 engine PS
137 wheel kW = 183.7 wheel hp = 186.3 engine PS

Anyone bored yet?

thanks for the replies guys

this is what i know

110 kw at the wheels = 160 kw engine output ...
therefore 137 kw at the wheels should be around 195 kw engine output
( i know that a lot of power is lost through the drivetrain due to 4wd)
195 kw = 263 hp

is this correct?

Pfft. I should be so lucky. I left school in 1996...

leeps - If 160kW at the flywheel gives 110kW at the driven wheels, you're looking at roughly a 31% loss. 137kW at the wheels should therefore equate to about 199kW, or 267hp (271PS).
