The noise from the rear could be dif, wheel bearing, or even tyres. My '97 wagon was diagnosed by the dealers with a failed rear dif pinion bearing. Fortunately before I put it in for this (£700) I replaced the tyres - problem solved !! The noisy tyres were Pirellis, the quiet ones Goodyear F1s.
