Cleaning K&N cone filter

Cleaning K&N cone filter
Can anyone recommend a good way of cleaning k&n cone filter, without buying the specialised cleaner spray? On my old wet type, I soaked in petrol, and cleaned it out like sponge, but k&n is dry type, so don't know if the same can be done. Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks

You can clean the worst crud off the outside by gently blowing compressed air from the inside.
However, I'd recommend buying the proper K&N cleaner...That way, you can totally wash, dry and re-oil it.

I used petrol on my cone, then read the instructions.
DONT USE PETROLIUM SPIRITS TO CLEAN YOUR FILTER
As it will damage the filter ellements.
So I bought a new one, and last week cleaned it with the K&N filter cleaning and oiling kit, like your supposed too.
The filter I cleaned with petrol, looked OK after its bath. But the way the ellement gauze was spaced out had changed, it had bigger spaces in it, and when oiled looked 'holey'.
The buggered one is now on my other halves station car, there you go love, look what Ive bought for you.......
