Just got a WRX 94, auto, had problems with the gear box shortly after getting the car. £1100 later, i got the car back. Within 40 miles of driving the speedo started to go a bit mad, flicking up and down then hovering at the 40mph mark for a few mins, then when i put my foot down a little, the speedo just dropped to zero, then the engine check light came on. The car will not rev above 4500 which i undertsand is a safety feature when the engine check light comes on. I assume the speedo cable may have come loose. But when i looked it seems to be ok. Any other ideas as to what it could be? is the sensor located on the gear box prone to be a bit flimsy??

 

ok, removed the speedo cable and sender unit, looks ok, a little old and tatty, put it back in, but still no joy. anyone else had this before, is it worth getting a new speedo cable, or is it likely to be something else???

 

i had this with the speedo on my 95 wrx it just used to bounce at around 30 -40 and seemed like it was really reving hard.i just changed the cable it was sorted mate

 

yeah mine did that to start with for a bit then just died. can it be the cable, even though it looks fine?? any idea how much i can get one fro??? cheers

 

hi mate mine did that died fiddled about with it worked for 2 days then went again. i got one from a freind who has a scrapyard for 15 quid cant be that enpensive. just get the cable from any scrappys where abouts are you?

My 94 wrx did same,has your car got a inline converter(are the clocks up to 180mph) check cable back of clocks,check the gearbox its a big orange plastic thing that is a pain to screw in and a nightmare to get at unless car is on ramp.If you replace cable disconnect battery for about an hour then that will reset the engine light
