Question Best Turbo???, your opinions Please

I am looking at turbo`s to go on my 96 sti ra, The engines being built at the mo ,closed deck block, forged pistons, uprated rod`s, std new crank, oil pump mod, obx manifolds (or headers if you are that side of the pond) possumlink ecu, egt, wb afr, knocklink, I am looking for something that spools very quickly and will max out @approx 420 ish bhp, (probably only go to 350 ish till I can find a box to take it ) the car will be used daily plus hillclimb/ sprint/track, run on opti/ultimate
Looking at the IHI VF series, possably a vf39 , any good ?
TIA
Have a good one

Tim

TD05/06 20g - good option at a reasonable price.

Kind regards

Are they up there already?!
You may find that the vf39 in a sleeve bearing turbo, do they do a vf38 which if they do will possably be a rolller bearing turbo, but then you need to look at how well it flows the gasses and how capable it is for the sort of power you want, and AFAIK the VF22 is still the biggest VF series turbo....

I spent a lot of time trying to find something suitable for circa 400 - 450bhp out of my 2.33. Most people don't like the IHIs. iON ar a custom Garrett GT series are about the best, but you're looking at around £1,500 with custom up-pipe and down-pipe, whereas the TD05/06 20g is a bolt on option for around £800 and has proven over 430bhp on a 2.0.

Limit on Optimax on a 20G is about 390-400 BHP to be repeatably achieveable.

With additives you can add up to about 10% if you map specifically for it (eg. 10% methanol, enrich fuel map by 5%, advance ignition by 5 degrees).

20G can surge on a 2.0, so RPM based boost control is beneficial.

On my 2.46 there is no surge problem, suspect a 2.33 would be alright as well.

John

We'll soon see how it does on the 2.33 - once my ecu has been sorted out!

Kind regards

Thanks all so far , I should mention a few other things that may help, I already have a TD05 at the moment, perfect condition, probably being silly changing it, but you know how it is :-) it is a top entry but to convert to front is possable
Modify`ing most things is not that dificult for me , I have easy access to most machining/welding/fabricating localy.
TIA

You can get Andy Forrest to convert your TD05 to an 06 which is front entry. This is your cheapest option. Contrary to what has been said, the Ion P450 is a direct replacement, you may have to grind one of the gear box bolt flanges, the cost is circa £1,000 subject to exchange rate.
With the Ion P450 I started at 417bhp and went all the way to 585bhp.

Mmm, more like £1250 when I checked not so long ago, so around £1600 delivered?

John,

got a 20g on my P1. What are the symtoms of surge. i know what surge is as i do a lot of works on gas compressors.

What will happen to the car under a surge. I have been experiencing "blips" where the car loses power and boost for a split second under load. Almost sounds like a "pah", car loses power for a split second before carrying on again.

Are there any dangers to the engine when a surge occurs? Also is there a solution?

Thanks
Kev
