Default steering wheel puzzle

Hmmmm, right, well, what the hell's going on here? Recently removed the standard airbagged Momo steering wheel on my MY00 to swap with another, almost identical wheel ( sti type with red stitching ), direct swap. Prior to the swap, the wheel was perfectly centred on its splines. No probs until it came to getting the new one centred....it won't have it. It's either noticeably off to the right, or ever so slightly off to the left. All I can think is that the splines on the new one are not fitted into the wheel exactly as on the other one...however, as always, I'm open to any other reasonable suggestions.Anyone else had this?

Think your first suggestion is on the money. The way these steering wheels are made often means there are subtle differences in the alignment of the frame and hub to the injection-moulded foam.

In the circumstances just stick with whichever one is closer to the mark, then get it centred whenever the time next comes to have the tracking checked.

Thanks for that greasemonkey, couldn't think of anything more plausible. I was hoping it'd be you that saw this. Btw, do you suffer from insomnia....just seen what time you posted.

I agree with GM. What I would do is set it to the left so that when you allow for the pull of the camber it's straight. Won't always be correct but better than the other way.

Alternatively, if it REALLY bothers you - you can separate the steering column from the knuckle that connects it to the rack and reposition the shaft [column] into the knuckle - you might just find that the wheel now lines up when you replace the steering wheel. Years ago when l worked in a dealership we did that many times. Real p-i-t-a but it works.
