Tech help 4 'ickle gurl
Hi all at SN,
Just got me a '99 Sti import
I don't mind getting my hands dirty but i don't know anything 'bout the car.
Can any one direct me to a site that might offer me to the basic's in maintenance.
or
Whats the best oil to use in my motor?
I have a Turbo Timer that keeps 'BEEPING' @ me when the voltage hits 13.5ish, should i reset this lower, or just keep my revs up?
and last one, tyre pressures??
33 Front
31 REAR
sound about right?
See you out on the country lanes!

Welcome to ScoobyNet
I hope you know that the Jap imports are all designed to run on 100 RON fuel, and we only get 98 RON (Optimax) at best here in the U.K. Most of the import users stick a bit of octane booster in with Optimax to get it to 100 RON. This is important as you may get detonation if too lower octane is used. Det can blow up your engine very quickly. You should be able to get yours re-mapped for UK fuel alleviating the need for octane booster.
Your tyre pressures sound about right, you can vary by a few psi either way to see what feels right
Sorry don't know anything about turbo timers, oil most would recommend a good synthetic not too sure on the correct viscosity, I know they don't like it too thin.

The Turbo timer should have an upper and lower battery alarm - the lower ideally needs setting around 11.5volts and the upper around the 14.8volt mark. With the engine running the voltage can reach ~14.4volts
The recommended oils for scoobs are - Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w/50 , Motul 300V 15w/50 or Castrol RS 10w/60 and the procedure for carrying out an oil and filter change is shown below :-
Cheers

1) Warm engine
2) Drain old oil from sump
3) Remove old filter
4) Pre-fill new filter with fresh oil. Fill and keep filling until it won't take anymore.
5) Apply new filter
6) Apply new washer to sump plug and tighten
7) Fill engine oil filler to mid-way between two holes on the dipstick
8) Disconnect crank sensor
9) (Preferably) remove spark plugs
10) Dry crank engine at least until oil pressure light extinguishes - ideally for 20 seconds or so more.
11) Refit spark plugs
12) Refit crank sensor plug
13) Start engine, leave to idle for a good minute or so before driving for oil pressure to stabilise
14) Check sump plug and filter seal for adequate tightness/leaks
15) Go for slow drive until engine fully warmed
16) Top engine oil to upper hole
17) Check sump plug and filter seal for adequate tightness/leaks
