what age cars need cats?

hi, when did cars have to have a cat converter?

is it around '91 / "J" reg ?

yep as a general rule any 'k' reg onwards needs one. i can't remember the exact date though

After Aug '92 or Aug '94 depending on model AFAIK. You don't have to have a 'cat but you do need to meet the emissions that a 'cat would provide. DL

Jan 93 was the date

Most cars had cats on by 1991 though.
