Exclamation What is overboost

Hi wondering if you could help me, i have seen a couple of threads about over boosting, What is it (i know its too much boost) and what causes it, i have a 97 wrx with full system and induction kit, its going in for a decat at the end of the month, will i experience over boost and how can it be cured? Whats the best boost to be running? Thanks, im very confused

If you are going to have a full decat (and if you do not already have one) get a knocklink mate... at least then you can monitor DET.

Overboost...well... some people suffer... some do not. It will be very obvious if you do get it... do you have a boost gauge?.. (if not, another worth while investment..)

Do not know the normal peak boost on a 97 wrx (I am sure someone here will), but if overboost occures the ecu will cut the boost causing a huge power loss, sometimes it may even put you into "limp home mode" with minimal boost aloud.

I dont have a knock link or a boost gauge, am definately going to order one tomorrow, what causes det and how can it be resolved also the over boost, would it be worth while instead of a boost guage, buying a boost controller? cheers

When you get pre-detination (DET) in the cylinder during high load.

With the exhaust being more free-flowing, the turbo can spin up quicker than the ecu is programmed to expect, thus causing too lean a mix.

The best way to avoid DET is to have the car re-mapped after the de-cat.
But what you could do it fit the knocklink before any further mods and check your car is not prone to DET. Then, if everything is good, have the de-cat and check it again, if things are still happy then do not worry about the re-map, but it's always good to know.
Overboost can be sorted with restrictors (£6 from xtreamscoobies), so no real need for a boost controller.

PS. I'd have a boost gauge over a boost controller anyday. IMOA

That's beyond my knowlege mate sorry...

GM may be able to give you advice on things like swapping ecu's?

If it's booked in there is no real reason not to have it fitted, but you need the tools to monitor what's going on, hense boost gauge and knocklink.. minimum...
You may find no problems at all, I am sure there are hundreds of wrx's out there running de-catted pipes with standard ecu's, and showing no ill effects.

is your wrx a UK or JDM?

Every job creates ten more ..PMSL

you need to get a new sensor as well.

It's not a good idea to have both knocklinks on the same sensor mate.

There is a bolt to the rear of the engine (someone may post a pic up) discussed on previous threads that is the ideal position for the new sensor.

I'll have a search for it....

Ah just remembered you have a 97 wrx... doh!

I was thinking of the newage...

not a clue when it comes to classics....

Best bet is to post a "where do I fix the koncklink sensor on a 97wrx JDM" thread,

GM or The Judge will know, you just need to get there attention...

Best way to get GM's attention is to start quoting STI numbers (6,7,8 etc) that always gets a response. LOL
