Default uprating turbo on WRX wagon TD004

My car is a 1994 WRX wagon that normally produces about 220PS. I recently had to buy a second hand turbo and replace my current one as it was shagged and I needed to use the car urgently. The second hand turbo cost 100 quid from API and it took about 6 hours to change and works great so I was pretty happy about it.

It was old though so now I have a bit of time, and I know I can do the work myself I would like to get a newer/better turbo, but I dont want to spend silly money.

1) If I get an uprated turbo then I assume I have to remap, is that right?
2) Can I buy a new TD004 turbo from anywhere, perhaps with ballbearings that would fit my car, without remapping.
3) Could I get a TD005 and a secondhand 1995/96 ECU 260BHP for the saloon, and thereby have the same performance as the '96 saloon.

Cheers for any advice.

If you are intending increasing power much over standard then it would be adviseable to at least get your fueling and knock level checked, bearing in mind your car was designed for better fuel than we have in the UK.

I wouldn't bother looking for a ball bearing TD04, not sure if they even exist ?

Either a secondhand TD05 (kinda scarce ) or a later IHI VF series turbo such as a VF30, 34 or 35 would be a good choice. All 4 are well capable of 300+bhp

Thanks.

Not really looking for serious power but a bit more woudl be good. Just want a newish or good condition turbo and thought I might have some good options available.

I am using Optimax AND octane boost on evey tank at the moment.

Perhaps I should just see a good tuner who can give me the turbo, a chip for UK fuel and increased boost etc and get it all done in one go afterall.

any suggestions? in the SW, near Taunton.

I have just recently followed a simialar path. After much messing around i would suggest that the first thing you do is buy a chip. I have a VOS chip in my car. Which has the same ECU. This chip will transform your car. It costs about 150.

The chip will set your car for UK fuel 95 octane + so you can use just optimax or SUL. The chip releases a LOT of power in the engine. A 94 WRX with the chip should deliver over 270bhp, bu the torque everywhere is massively improved. The driveabillity will be miles better, fuel economy better, a smoother more powerfull engine mapped for our fuel. Best 150 you will ever spend on your car and you will save it in octane booster alone, lol..

You will proberly find that you dont need anymore power than this chip will release. I also have a induction kit, exhaust etc and my car really flies..I was massively impressed.

If you want a newer turbo i would replace the one you have (if you think it is knackered?) with a newer TDO4. Get the car running right with the chip and 16psi. its enough if your not chasing bigger power.

There are good prices on TDO4's i have seen on eBay recently with a few going under 100 and usually about 150-200 for nearly new. There are also TDO5's from 200 and VF30 etc, etc..

There is only so mutch stress you wont to put through standard inards IMHO, so for 300 quid you will transform your car and get a newer turbo. A wicked deal....

cheers. that sounds good. where do I get this chip from?
Anyone know if the newer TD004's fit straight on to the older WRX as Dave from API seemed to think that the new ones might not go on.

What other things need attention if/when replacingthe TD04 with a TD05, even if leaving it a 90 degree entry?
Already have AFR/Knicklink, Walbro fuel pump and reg, STiV TMIC, OBX headers, samco etc.
Will the ECU need remapping - currently a ScoobyECU map/chip / board.

Looking for more midrange and top end torque & power to use the supporting mods!
