Question Plug on alternator. Whats it for

Hi all
Rapid reply needed.
On my 1993 wrx, the plug that goes in the side of the alternator is square. Ive just had delivered to me another alternator from a newer classic and it has a round plug!
Does anyone know what this plug does? Can i fit the round plug one on the car and not put the plug on to determine if its the alternator thats faulty or will this procedure cause damage to the engine?
Please help

Johnny
