hi all, have just bought a boost gauge for my99 preza. having taken it out for a bit of a spin found that it boosts to 12psi in 5th. is this normal?? also have invested in a bleed valve when i put this on what can the boost be wound upto? i have just got the standard ecu. thanks for reading this and i would like to hear what you all think. thanks simon

Did you mean an Impreza?

Boost target is 0.9 bar, which equals just over 13psi, so either you weren't loading the car up quite enough when you took this measure (try accelerating hard up a slight hill in fourth), or your boost gauge isn't quite as accurate as it could be.

Depends entirely on what fuel you are running, how healthy the sensors on your engine are, whether there are any other modifications present, what petrol you use, and indeed how accurate your boost gauge is.

The only way to know what boost pressure is safe is to monitor detonation, and ideally air:fuel ratio. You can do the former with a KnockLink and the latter with an AFR meter.

i have just got the standard ecu.
Which one would that be? MY99 UK Turbos came with three different ECU's, so you can see why it's not possible for anyone to simply tell you that your engine is safe up to such and such a boost pressure. All these engines are slightly different and the only person able to find out how far your engine will safely go is you.

Plug it into a Select Monitor or DeltaDash, or, if you don't have access to those, just lift the passenger footwell carpet and the ECU cover, and look at the label. Will be either AE800, AE801 or AE802.

AE800 and 801 are about the same power wise. AE802 develops slightly less power, feels smoother (i.e. car comes on boost a little more gradually), has more active knock detection and a reputation for hesitant throttle response.
