Gents, on 22b.com, I've read a thread that states that a td04->td05 swap needs some work on water pipes - the thread refers to banjos ....
I've just received my TD05 and its got 'pipes' attached - However, I thought (serves me right!) that the banjo'd pipes would be oil and the 'push on with jubilee clip' pipes would be water...
A) Someone please correct me, if I'm wrong
B) can someone explain just what is really the issue.....
i.e. are the banjo connections at the turbo different for td04 and td05, are the pipes that are fitted to the 05 OK to fasten at the non-turbo end ? Are you simply saying that the pipes on a td04 wont fasten to an 05, but the ones on an 05 will fit a car previously kitted out with an 04 ?

aha - this is the sort of answer I mean....
When you say 'a straight swap', you're talking my language - but... when you say 'different sized'....
where (i.e. which end of the pipes) - Mines got the pipes (water / oil ?), but if the 'car' end is different than the td04, how does it fit ?

theres an oil pipe that goes from the drivers side of the turbo, that goes from side to top of turbo. thats the different sized pipe for oil feed. the coolant pipe IIRC comes from header tank to rubber pipe underneath the turbo. someones bound to have a better more in depth answer, but thats what i can remember off the top of my head

If you have the TD05 complete with oil and water pipes attached then it is a direct fit. The difference in the pipes is where they fix at the turbo. The car end, where it fits to the hoses is identical.
I'm assuming your TD05 is already adapted to front entry ?

Andy - Yes, the TD05 is adapted to FE. The chap who fits parts I can't do easily (which is basically up-pipe, clutch and rocker covers, so far) is going to do the swap for me - as he runs his own garage, so has the car ramps etc - seeing as he swapped the up-pipe 3 weeks ago, I'm sure he'll be able to do it fairly easily, but I needed to be clear on the pipe issue, as he's not done a TD04->TD05 before
I'm almost tempted to get him to do the fuel reg / pump at the same time, as I've been told its easier to do with the turbo off ?

With the turbo removed access to the oem fuel pressure regulator will be much better thus making its removal easier - the fitting of the fuel rail adapter (fits in place of oem FPR) will also be much easier

Yes it is easier whilst the turbo is off, thats for sure !
You can get away with just changing the regulator and turbo one weekend and leave the pump until the next ?
The uprated pump needs an uprated reg but not the other way round if you get my drift !

On the earlier cars the FPR is not so difficult as there are 6mm? hex heads rather than the philips screws on the later cars, there is more room to manoeuvre with the turbo off though. If doing the FPR with the turbo off then just note that the bolt holding the top-front uppipe bracket to the block will be obscured once the FPR adaptor is fitted.
I am sure that the water pipe banjos on my TD05 were larger than those on the TD04.
Another thing to watch out for is clearence between the lower water pipe and the gearbox, the pipe may need bending slightly to help it fit.

OK - wrt: fitting the fpr only, and pump later, should the fpr still be set at 3bar ? I assume that the standard pump will cope with that, as its the standard setting ?

Andrew, yes the banjos at the turbo are different but the pipe ends are the same fitment to the OE hoses.
Std pump will be fine at 3 bar, it will just run out of capacity when asked to keep going at the high flow rates required by a bigger turbo/injectors at higher boost.

Looks like I need the TD05 pipes then, my TD05 came bare!
My TD05 is still a 90 degree inlet, as the TD04 on my WRX wagon is a 90 degree entry, assume it will be easier to fit like for like?
Do the above comments ( oil and water hoses etc ) still apply to the 90 degree entry TD04/TD05's ??

Yes Neil, yours will be a straight swap, no problem. The top oil feed is the same on all the Subaru turbos.
Quick tip - before fitting your TD05 check that the wastegate is tightly closed. The disc 'penny' should be tight against the exhaust housing and you should be unable to turn it with your fingers. If it is free then adjust the linkage to tighten it.
This is the main reason some early cars are much laggier than others, approx 30% of the TD05's I see have a slack wastegate linkage.

Thanks for the help on that, didn't want to get half way through and find a mismatch in hoses or something!!!
Any other things that can be done before fitting ? Wire brush out the carbon, etc

Had mine done today - There was a problem:
The boost pipes (from compressor housing via T-piece to Wastegate Actuator) are smaller on the TD04 than the 5.
I've had to use a new boost pipe, together with a T-piece and reducer that came with my AVC-R kit - BUT, that means I've no restrictor in-line.
Think it should be OK, till I can get to AndyF, but need to check whether a restrictor will be needed -
Prior to doing yours, I'd check the piping....

Cheers Richard - I've spoken to Andy F and am booked in for early August - I'll be taking it easy till then (Under .2 bar and 4K revs), so I should be OK -
As you say, the AVC-R doesn't use the restrictor, so I'll be ok post-install too

I seem to recall that I was told that the TD04 ( or maybe just import TD04 wagons? ) don't actually have a restrictor in the lines.
Now, if TD05's need one, I am in same position as you.
Not fitted the TD05 yet, did sort the wastegate as Andy.F suggested, was rather loose needed 3 turns on actuator bar to tighten it up to where I could only just rotate it with fingers! At first it would spin with little pressure!!! :0
Got all gaskets and some spare studs etc to fit it, just waiting on new map chips for the ecu piggyback board for TD05. Soon as they come I'll be fitting the TD05.
Not sure whether to go for a custom board map or an after market ECU ... Apexi PFC seems favourite.. any comments out there on best ECU uprate?
