Risky as f***k - Normal unleaded.

Risky - Super Unleaded

Bit of risk - Optimax

Risk-free - Optimax & Octane Booster or a remap

Assuming standard JDM ECU maps, I'd say...

95RON UL - Don't touch with a barge pole (even with octane booster).
BP Ultimate - If I had to, but with lots of NF Race.
97RON SUL (Esso) - OK, but with a good dose of NF Race.
Optimax - Safest bet, but again with a good dose of NF Race.

I wouldn't use ANY fuel without a good quality octane booster...

I've been debating this issue since I've had my scoob - only a couple of months. Previous owner always used Optimax with no booster, and I have been doing the same.

Have done a lot of research, and read a lot of posts from people who are adamant that just Optimax is fine assuming standard boost. These peeps have fitted knocklinks and all clear.

Then there are a lot of peeps (as Judge above), who always use booster.

I have been debating different options:

1. Remap
2. Optimax and booster
3. Optimax
4. Knocklink

At the moment going with option 3, and at the mo everything fine. Standard boost, just full-decat and green panel filter.

Am strongly considering fitting a knocklink anyway, but if other peeps are correct mine should be fine as it is. If I don't fit a knocklink I'll start using NF Race soon methinks just for peace of mind.

You're absolutely right, it's a debate that will no doubt go on and on. However, a point worth mentioning. You say you're running standard boost (in other words, no manual boost controller)? The problem there is your decat. It will help the VE of the engine, which in turn will probably add a couple of psi to your max boost. That in itself will be enough to confuse the ECU. Add to that the fact you're not using fuel rated at 100RON... Personally, I'd be getting myself a knocklink, and sooner rather than later.

Fair point. I was actually thinking about that possibility as I was typing that post. I had a 200sx last year which I de-catted, and remember the same thing happening to the point where the Dawes I bought and fitted was a waste of time, as I was hitting fuel cut on nearly min setting.

So assuming then its raised my max boost, confusing the ECU which means poss of det? If I start using NF Race now, best to reset ECU first and then put in Booster?

We have lots of customers with imports.

Some use Optimax and a booster, others use just plain Optimax.

Of those that use Optimax only, many don't have a problem but I would say that it does depend a lot on the type of driver you are on how safe Optimax alone is.

If you are the kind of person that screws the car around or sits cruising at 120, then in my experience, optimax is not good enough on its own. I have seen numerous standard imports (ie running standard boost) blown through very high speed cruising, which, let's face it, is not what the car is meant to do.

If however, you are a bit of a pootler who has an occasional squirt now and again, then by and large, you'll be fine on Optimax alone.

Personally, if it was my car I'd always run a booster, regardless. As Falkirk Scoob says above it's only a couple of quid a fillup (£3 if you use Millers) and a knocklink, I think, is an essential item on an import.

Ok I'm convinced. Where is the best place online to order booster - presumably Millers or NF Race? Would prefer online ordering system to avoid hassle, maybe buying say £50 of it at a time - anyone know any deals at the mo??

NF Race actually works out cheaper than Millers (assuming the places that sell it for £13 have it in stock... ) as a 300ml bottle will treat 6 fill-ups (50 litre). That's £2.17 per fill-up...!

You'll do well to find anywhere doing deals on the stuff. I got my last lot from SCC Performance for £14.50 per bottle. Unfortunately, no on-line ordering system though...

Ta Judge.

Anyone else know of places for this stuff - been searching the web for it and there don't seem to be that many places that stock it, especially with on-line ordering?

Ok thanks. Got fed up of trying to find NF in the end, so gone with Millers for now - from Camskill £37 delivered for 10 bottles. I'll give Millers a whirl, not quite as good apparently but easier as you empty a whole bottle in per tank.

Millers is OK, I think it's the "best of the rest" as it were. It certainly helped me to quieten a "noisy" Knocklink when I was running on BP Ultimate. And you're right, it is easier to use. You'd think the NF would come in a transparent bottle, with 50ml marks down the side...
