Default Classic shape intercooler size help please

At the time that intercoolers were fitted square to the engine (i.e. not on an angle), does anybody know whether the STi intercoolers were bigger than the WRX versions?

In particular, it's MY97/98 i need to know about, which would relate to v4 STi.

Apart from the silver paint, is there any difference in size or efficiency?

Thanks in advance.

No difference in size, and the only difference in design is that the entry side header is a slightly different shape on the Sti item - it lacks a slight recess that the std one has. As for efficiency, well, they look the same....

Excellent - thanks for that. Confirms what i'd been told by somebody who wasn't sure.

So the question is - what power output is this intercooler sufficient for? I have an intercooler splitter, but will i run into issues if i'm running 300+ bhp?

Can a v5/v6 intercooler be fitted straight on, assuming i blank the dump valve outlet? Would this give any significant cooling advantage?

Hi mate - yes i briefly saw your thread on the subject. From what i gathered though, it took quite a bit of fiddling about, right?

Telboy, i have a standard WRX import MY97.
They (as you may know) are rated at 280 ps, I believe there are several components
installed as standard, that the STi version has, obv to help cope with the power.
One of them is the induction pipe and MAF, as I found out when trying to obtain a replacement MAF. The intercooler could well be another one.
Other bits ?? who knows

Hi Tel, my thread was fitting a sti v6 intercooler to a pre 96 wrx(slanted type intercooler)

this is a pain in the ****!

the post 96(straight type intercooler) has a lot more room to work with so the v7/8 will go in, i know it has been done with very little work needed but haven't tried it myself.

Ok mate, thanks.

So the v5/v6 intercooler is a significantly different/better bit of kit to the v4?

the sti v5/6 is easier to fit to the pre 96 as you just have to blank off the d/valve hole.

i wouldn't say its better than an sti v4 intercooler just easier to fit to the early cars.
