Smile FAO Bob Rawle re ECU Jap-Uk ecu swap

I receently changed the ecu in my wrx99 to an AE801.
I was told the cam and crank sensor wires need to be swapped and that should do it.
After buying an ecu and swapping the 2 wires, the car wont start.

I looked through the pinout diagram and noticed that the fuel pump relay wire also needs to change position. The fuel pump now pumps but it still wont start.
Im getting fault codes :11 21 44 53 when joining the plugs together under the column.

When putting it back to normal with the jap ecu,it starts and there is no fault codes.

I noticed another wire shown on the diagram with an asterisk next to it(immoboliser type)
Is there another wire that needs swapping/changing?
Is the Immoboliser deffinately an external device only?

Please help.

Chears for the reply

this is an sti ecu so AFAIK they do require swapping.

I did try the uk ecu with both combinations of cam/crank wires.

How do you tell the difference between a JDM and UK CPU - can it be done visually?

Gavnick,The numbers on the ecu tell you but you would need to post them on here so one of the experts can tell you what type of unit it is.

Thanks for your help Bob

Unhappy

Im still trying to get this sorted,so any help would be appreciated.

The one pin I cant work out is B136= GND cont systems,1 for immoboliser type,21 for non and then there is 18 above ?

B136 21= oxygen sensor signal,B136 1= mass airflow sensor signal.

What is supposed to happen with these wires?

The cam and crank wires have been swapped and so has the fuel pump wire.

Please help.

BTW this is where Im getting the info from:http://www.fs66.dial.pipex.com/image...ts/MY99ecu.pdf

I think that has to be a misprint ? those B136 pins 1/21 can't be both ground and supply for different items
I assume you have done the B136 pin 5/6 swap.

Have you also changed B134 from 1 to 21 ? I don't think you should need to unless you require an immobiliser (which you don't have in the WRX anyway) I'd put these 2 back to original positions.

The other thing to watch is that IIRC, this drawing shows a view looking on the face of the plug and not looking on the ECU, it's easy to get mixed up with the numbers, just check which side the 3 rows/4 rows of pins are.

Dij - I didn't think your car was a WRX - does that make a difference?

Thanks for the help Andy (didnt get a chance to call you)

Very excited and tried this out again today, but it turns out I was doing it correctly.

The view of the pins is looking directly at the ECU.B136 5+6 are red and white. These where swapped.B134 21 was swapped to 1 (fuel pump wouldnt work otherwise).Still nothing happened.

The cel light flashed so I joined the plugs and got code 53.
WTF is this supposed to mean?I can only find fault codes upto 51.

Im beginning to think that the AE80# ecus require the immoboliser wiring to be inplace inorder for them to switch on.
Ive notice that the pinout diagrams dont actually tell you what all the wires in the plug do,and perhaps its only the ones that are relevant to ecu upgrades.

Not sure if the ecu code is telling me that this ecu is nackered.

Anyone have any more sugestions before I think about driving upto Scotland to get this problem sorted out?

Bump...I'm having exactly the same problem now. I blew up my AF001 and got a AE802. Car is a JDM STi 6. Was a solution found for this problem?

Gosh this was years ago now,(thank god I dont have a scooby any more)

Ok,the sti 6 wont work with an AE80* ecu because the AE80* ecus are designed to be used with a factory immoboliser and require all the wiring to be in place for the ecu to switch on.

If you have an sti6 and need an ecu then its best to get one the same as the unit that came out.
An sti5 may work but it may have a more aggressive map that can cause problems to your engine quicker(AFAIK).

Otherwise an aftermarket ecu like a link or apexi is the only way.
