Angry tappets faults......tap tapping away

Hi new here and need some help!

I have a '96 2 ltr sport impreza (non turbo) only done 57k, which Ive had for 1,5 yrs, bought 2nd hand from approved dealer.

2 days ago I got the familar knackered tappet noise from the left hand side of the engine, take it to the garage (non dealer) who replaced all 4 tappets...£181 later and the engine sounds sweet again, no noise.

Literally done about 30 miles and the noise is back, same side of the engine. I understand they are hyrdaulic tappets in banks of 4, hence best to replace all 4.

Whats causing this, engine oil is fine, not burning or leaking oil.....and I hardly really 'push' the engine.

Any advice also on the garage and whether they should do the further work for free....local garage that I've used before.

Any non-technical advise greatly received!

Many thanks
Adam

Billyfish

Good man, thanks for the reply. I think its probably a standard problem as the engine was modified post 96 to have adjustable tappets. The engine oil level is fine, even checked as the noise is happening.

Will try engine flush, could there be a problem with the oil pump? sorry I'm not very techie!

My legacy turbo has started to make tappet noises too, especially after i changed to Motul 300V! I don't know what to do to cure it as it was always as sweet as a nut!
Might change the oil to a thinner vareity like it says in the book! I'm hoping one oil change wont of shagged the oil pump!

Cheers
