Default Short block

I've been told by a Subaru dealer my big ends gone.

The've given me a approx price of £3500 inc vat but it could be more once they start (they might find more damage).

On the approx estimate the've included a "short block"

Don't know what to do, should i get subaru to do the work or can someone recommend someone else as the work subaru do can't be done with a warrenty due to mods on the car.

P.s. what is a short block?

Any advise would be good, where to go? what would you do?

Thanks Adam

contact one of the reputable dealers on here.

there are a couple or three to chose from.

API, Scoobyclinic and maybe more. These guys have a good reputation and will not rip you off.

ninja edit: short block is the bottom half of the engine (below the heads).

A mate of mine has done a 2.5 conversion-so far its cost him about £2k,all hes got to do now is get it mapped after he gets it run in.

Hes expecting to spend about another £1k.

So,a total of about £3k,and an unstressed 350bhp(est) cant be bad eh

BTW-hes done all the work himself,so no labour charges

Thanks for all your replys, i'll have to do some phoning around tomorrow.

Anyone know how much a normal 2L engine/short block would cost going to a reputable company.

Thanks

About £1500 for a short motor.

I think Subaru were doing a great exchange deal, something like £1200 I think..

just be wary on dealer diagnoses (and quotes)................in very general terms they are less likely to take on a "rebuild" and will most probably just want to do the job with the minimum fuss and time (and max. profit)..................

we have overhauled various engines written off by main dealers without resorting to exchange bottom ends...............(as probs have other independants!!)

Adam, give me a call on Monday and l'll talk you through the possibles, probables and give a fixed cost quote as l always do for, [it seems ] everybody. No B/S just facts.

3500 for a short motor? they're dreaming. you can buy a nice car for that.

OR pm me if you want and can't wait to be put out of your agony.

Thanks David

I'll phone you durring the week, if not Monday.

I need to do what's needed but don't/can't spend too much due to baby on the way and i was about to put the car on the market before this happened.

Still going to sell so i need a reputable company to do the work. Everyone now knows the big ends gone on my car but i need to make people feel confident when buying it.

While your online, what makes a big end go??
The car has always been serviced on time, NEVER pushed when cold (oil temp under 80*C) etc, etc, etc.

Speak to you Monday or soon after

Thanks Adam

Powerstation are selling brand new 2.0 bottom ends for £800.00

They don't need them as they are putting 2.5's into the Type 25. These blocks are from brand new STI 9/Spec C's

My Big End went. Was quoted around £3000k from my local dealer. The car had only 52,000 miles on the clock. No warranty though. I wrote to Subaru and they paid for all parts. Worth a try ?

Believe me Adam, there's never a good time for an engine failure !! Re the big end question, how long have you got?? There are many theories on here and they have been published and damned many a time. I have my opinions, which l have aired, bearing in mind how many we see.

It's no big secret but l'll tell you my ideas when you ring.
