Default Header tank/cooling system question

Just got hold of an alloy header tank for MY95 WRX, there is no overflow pipe attachment, is it safe to run without this feature ?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, any help appreciated.

I'm puzzled.
If the tank is for a Scooby then I'm sure the manufacturer would have welded in the stub tubes for the oem hoses?

There is a small tube that runs from the atmosphere side of the 'radiator' cap on the header tank. If that is NOT there don't use it. The rad cap is set carefully to prevent damage to the system and keep the boiling point of the coolant at the right place.

Check if it REALLY is a Scooby part.

Got a picture mate?

I got a metal tank that can be found on later STI's and P1. You can get them for about £30-40 from most breakers.

Cant imagine it being safe not to have an overflow - otherwise pressure will pop something if it has no proper release.

Bought it off eBay, questioned the bloke about it and and reply was , "i fit them all the time we never fit the over flow and i have a 93 with one
on it!!!! but some need one that is not as high i have them in stock as well
if you need this one send it back and i will swap it"
It was advertised that it fits 92-01 and at the time i did not know they were different from 97-02 i believe is it ?, as i have a MY95 WRX and it dont fit either without a bit of modification, i havent used the car without the overflow pipe and wont be doing now thanks to your kind input on the matter.
I can send you a pic but i dont know how to post them up, do you want to PM me your e-mail addy or something.
Cheers
Matt

Thumbs up

I have a 94 STI and the change really was going from the unreliable plastic coolant tank to a sealed metal one - if you do go the metal route
(and it is the better one), all you need is to make a small bracket (easy - even I managed it), and buy some slightly longer hoses (got mine from Halfords). If you go on my website there a short 'how to' and a finished picture as well. Once you do it, you can forget about it.

If you need any help then PM me and I'll give you what I've got.

Cheers,
Marky
