Could well be - does it tend to happen if the previous drive was in the wet?

Could also be a sticking handbrake?

Not noticed to be honest, but maybe as it has been raining alot lately. Never had it happen when not reversing though. Sounds like it comes from the middle of the car, normally within the first foot or so of reversing, then no other symptoms. Maybe I should just make sure I park the car so I can only drive out forwards LOL!

The rear brembos on my STi frequently do this. Alarmingly loud sometimes. A clean sorts it out for about 5K then it starts again.

It should feel like it sticks for a second, rear lifts very slightly then clunk (loudly) and back you go.

I've had this on occasions with most of the cars I've had with rear disc brakes! usually when the cars stood for a while (few days).

Worn droplinks can also clonk whilst setting off either in reverse or forward...I would check these first...Could be as simple as that...A couple of new links..Another possable cause is the strut top mounts...Does it sound like a sharp knock..?????.Kev.

Sticky handbrake. I'd agree that it's usually when the car has stood for a while, try leaving it in gear when your parked up next time with the handbarke off, see if it happens when you next drive it

Wink how about...

could well be the rear Diff, maybe the wrong/contaminated oil inside or even running low, GC8/WRX models sometimes make a weird dry grinding rotating noise when only going slow if they have Diff problems..I.E a 3 point turn, find out what Diff you got....slipper etc.... could be the slipper plates knackered also..in truth could be many things mate but I have or should I say am having simlar problems with noises coming from the rear at slow speeds...

Done all the basic usual checks, pads, discs etc...and now gone even more in depth to find the actual problem and indeed more importantly the cure, uk subaru dealers are as helpfull as a chocolate tea pot, they would not even tell me the oil to use !!! t*ssers...

Anyway I think you get my point that the rear diff may be worth a look..

Red face

Thanks for all the replies, sounds like it may be something to do with the brakes or handbrake. Has not done it last couple of times I have reversed it. If it gets worse will take it to garage Another strange noise for me to worry about !!

I agree with most regarding brakes. I'm my third Scooby and all have at some time made this "clunk" when first reversing off my drive. This is the pads stuck to the disks. Its usually worse when raining and driving 'spiritly' (read: brakes hot) then you park up and put the handbrake on.
