cleaning idle control valve
Are there any special tips when cleaning the idle control valve (98My UK Turbo)...
Can I simply remove it, clean it and put it back on, or does it require any kind or setup (or marking prior to removal)...
The car's been stalling occassionally when pulling up - as the revs drop initially too low and then recover - it doesn't seem to hunt too much after giving it a blast of carb. cleaner into the control vavle air intake (removed pipe), but still drops initially - sometimes it recovers and other times it drops enough for it to stall.
Cheers,
Mark

Are you sure it's not simply too low a duty cycle on the ICSV? Can you adjust that on the PFC?
If cleaning doesn't help, I have a spare one you could borrow to test with.

Andrew - Not sure its adjustable - If it were, what would the adjustment do (i.e. would it adjust the idle, or is it a frequency of 'idle speed adjustment') ?
Its as if the idle has closed during on-throttle operation and is slow to re-open. Once the idle has settled (i.e. after the initial drop and recover), it rest around 850, +/- 15 rpm - so that seems OK.
Thanks for the offer of the borrow - I'll perhaps take the top off it and give it a clean - I thought I'd seen somewhere that the screws need to be re-located exactly, but now I'm not sure....
Also, its been OK for a couple of months, since the map, but I guess the temp has dropped a bit ?
I'll let you know if I need to borrow your 'spare'
Ta,

mine went a bit wobbly the other day - took off the control valve (no need to mark etc.) gave it a good clean out with Carb. cleaner - it was covered in a black sticky stuff .
this helped no end , but idle was a still a bit low.
i've since plugged in the controller to my power fc and turned up the idle from 750 to 850 - all 100% now .

nyscooby: Ph.2 engines don't have a separate solenoid valve, they use a stepper motor on the throttle butterfly.
Mark: I would have thought the PFC has some initial duty cycle setting for the ICSV.

Andrew - You might be correct on the PFC, but its been OK since AndyF mapped it in August, so I think it might be dirty and (probably more importantly) I don't have a commander to check/adjust it.. Though I'm thinking of getting one - sounds a useful bit of kit - I originally thought I'd NEVER look at, let alone adjust any values, but I'm re-thinking that, as there may be times I want to do remote diagnostics or change items under guidance......
I'll do the cleaning thing - then speak to AndyF re:settings if its still buggered....

Andrew...
The idle control on the Apexi is generally superior to std and I suspect this has the knock on effect of dislodging years of built up crud due to the faster action and/or wider operating range.
It seems quite common for the idle valve to need a quick clean out within a few months of a new install.

Cheers Andy - I'll keep an eye on it over the next couple of days, as it seems OK today, after my 'odd' boost fix - see PM on 22b - If its still mis-behaving, I'll whip it off and clean it -
