You will need a different turbo, if its only 300bhp your after (and reliability to other parts of the car) then id first of all suggest the brakes, then get a bigger turbo and a remap (at the same time as the turbo), oh and check with your insurance co!

Bobby-jo,

300bhp is a bad figure to set your sights on, as it isn't realistically achievable without changing the turbo.

You may get 285-290bhp from adding the Tek3 remap and you would save a heap of cash.

Just my opinion of course (Having spent S**tloads of money on mine trying to attain the 300bhp and beyond)

TD05 or VF34 will get you 300, but note that they will also get you more....and break your gearbox too

Yeah, a TD05 turbo can give the power easily and isn't too bad on lag once properly set up. I see 1bar of boost at 2850rpm and 1.25 at just over 3000. I have an Apexi Power FC ECU fitted and mapped (and re-mapped) by Andy F - most definitely worth the money.

Been down this road with a vf35 turbo. The costs escalate wildly for that elusive extra 20 horses..........plus when its all said and done, a tek 3 on a td04 turbo will be as quick in the real world. The extra lag of a bigger turbo meant on b road blasts, I was no quicker than my mates. Yeah great, my 1/4 mile time was 13.1 seconds but who cares about straight lines????

If you want 300 bhp ish you'll need:

Bigger turbo (VF35, TD05 etc)
Uprated fuel pump
Bigger injectors or adjustable fuel reg
Samco intercooler hoses
Possibly colder plugs
A spare day to fit it yourself or a spare bung of 20 pound notes to get it done.
..................plus the re-map too.

Have fun whatever you decide

Cool

would seriously suggest doing the brakes *first*
I have been there done that

Aftermarket headers add quite a bit of performance too

definately uprate the pump and reg too imo.
you want the most stable supply of fuel when you are up in the rev's - so budget for the best Fuel pressure reg and Pump that you can.

ECUTek option is great for plug and play.
if you want to tweak it yourself wrt cold start adjustment, or wastegate settings etc.. (some people like to do that) you will be wise to consider an alternative ECU.
Motec/Link/Gems/Autronic/Haltech/Pectel (only one- not all of em! )

I found with mine that the standard suspension and general body control was pants.
Let alone once the power shot up..
It's had the works wrt suspension/body control etc..

It's a never ending money pit mate, *but* when it's right it's oh so good

for up to 330ish

no injectors are needed
no headers
2001 on intercooler is a good move for flow
tek 3 is the best option
but 315 is easy
too many peeps going on about ecus injectors and so on and scaring
people off 300 can be done quite cheeply and relably with just the addition of a few choice parts and a re map as the 1999+ ecu is a very good bit of kit and if peeps want to talk about car specs then i can go there too.
2002 wrx not sti
2.5
motec
garrett
the list goes on
..... chris

Just to qualify wrrjones' above post.

My car (and not *that* much spent on it, either, apart from the TEK3)

I have a UK MY97 and recently got 346bhp on the rollers with this spec:

TD05/06 -20g hybrid turbo
Greddy Profec e-01 boost controller.
Magnex de-cat downpipe.
Magnex de-cat centre section.
GT Spec gen II headers.
TSL Firestorm backbox.
K&N Induction kit.
Forge VTA dump valve.
Hybrid Performance Products Front-mounted Intercooler.
550cc injectors.
Apexi Power FC (mapped by Andy F)
Walbro fuel pump and regulator.

The brakes and handling got sorted before doing all that though.

A VF28 should quite happily deliver the goods and have very similar characteristics to the TD04 but with slightly more top end power

Cheers

My powergraph is a VF24 - can be gotten quite cheaply now, just find a scrapped STi4 or similar.

Look at the torque line

get a td05, bullet proof and produces the goods no worries.
TEK3, yes Bob Rawle has an excellent reputation in the community, as your car is outside of warrenty agae, why not also have a look a aftermarket ecu's as well as reflashed OEM?
