gearbox oil type?
Just checked the gearbox oil level and is just below minimum and checked the handbook and it says to never mix different manufacturers oils.MY03 Turbo, can anyone tell me what grade and type should be put in and is it normal to use this much oil or has it not been checked on last service at 10k me wonders....powerman

Make sure you check the level with the car absolutely level. I've found the gearbox is very sensitive to this!
If it really has gone below min. where has it gone? there is nowhere for it to go unless there is a leak! Depending upon your mileage, I would be tempted to drain off the remaining oil and re-fill with a good semi-synthetic fluid such as Castrol Driveline (Syntrax)

Halfords stock Driveline (Syntrax) but if you're going to change the oil (recommended) get it from www.castrolclassicoils.co.uk (£1.5/ltr cheaper) Pay over the phone and it's with you in a couple of days!

PS It's fine for the rear diff.

Chris,
For the 5 speed box you'll need 3.8 litres for the gearbox (which also covers the front and centre diffs) and 0.8 litres for the rear diff. If yours is a viscous rear diff then you can use the same oil as the gearbox, if its a plated diff (STI type R etc.) then some use the same oil and some use a specific LSD oil.
Oh and for the gearbox it seems to be worthwhile to put a bit more in so its about 5mm above the max mark on the dip stick, think it helps to lubricate 3rd better.
Dave.

Gents for your info..i rang my local sooby dealer and they told me they use Castrol syntrax universal and i then rang good old Halfords and they stock it at around £8 a litre. i have since doubley checked on a dead level surface and the my oil level is smack in the middle of the low and high marks so it seems that its crucial to be on dead level ground. many thanks

Syntrax ... go to a dealer and take a 5ltr container, p1ss cheap, don't bother with Halfrauds. Its like dealing with Dick Turpin (at leat Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask !!)
