Granby just about summed it up there;

VF34 or VF35 or TD05 Turbo (2nd Hand TD05 in stock)
STi 7 or 8 Intercooler (2nd hand STi8 intercooler comes in tommorow)
STi 7 or 8 Pink Injectors (Top Feed) (in stock)
ECUTEK remap

Hopefully you already have the uprated fuel pump but we have them if not

Lord Bass

Similar to above here's my recipe for bugeye 300 BHP

TD05 front entry conversion turbo
STi Intercooler
Samco Silicon hoses
Sti Pink Injectors
FSE fuel pump
FSE fuel pump regulator
3 port boost solenoid
EcuTeK 3 Custom re-map by BRD (Bob Rawle) 1.38 bar max
Ported and wrapped headers
NGK PR7 plugs

For 300bhp it can be done a bit more cost effective. (are you sure you will stop there )
TD04 hybrid turbo
Sti intercooler
FSE fuel pump
NGK 7's
EcuTeK remap
(and possibly return to the OE induction system)

Does he really need the expense of the STi inetcooler for 300bhp? If he upgrades to a TD05 from the 04 the charge air will probabaly be cooler that it is now with the 04 'maxed' out. Personally if all he wants is 300bhp (probably won't stay at that target) i'd stick with his current intercooler.

Thats certainly an option Tony, there are a number of ways to do it. For 300 bhp, I personally prefer the wider power band option which would be achieved with the smaller turbo.
A hybrid TD04 is also cheaper than a reconditioned TD05 although the intercooler cost offsets this.

Also, the uprated TMIC will give lower pressure drop, i.e. make much better use of the (relatively small) amount of boost that the TD04 can produce.

Have to agree with Andy in that I've always avoided changing the turbo on my 02WRX as I like the fact that it's pulling hard by the time it passes 2500rpm. More power higher up is great for weekend/thrashing use, having full boost at ~65mph in top gear is nicer if you're wanting relaxed quick progress on motorway etc.

I've got say while my other turbo is off the car i'm actually loving the delivery of the TD04 i put on as a stop gap. Fantastic .

What about the TD04 hybrid and the WRX intercooler then...... i'm sure the intercooler can cope. If my slanty pre97 one can, anything can

No doubt it can cope. But the STi intercooler, or decent aftermarket one will give you 1-2psi less pressure drop, using the boost you do make a lot better.

talked to Roger Clark's today about this and they are strongly advising a modification to the vf35 before it goes on, something to do with the housing

any one know what this is its £400 + vat and Im not sure if its worth it, they are saying it will help them spool up the turbo much faster

Cheers

I think there is a worthwhile gain to be had from the Sti top mount, as hades mentioned, there is the lower pressure drop for the charge air to consider as well as the additional cooling.

For £400 they must be making it into a hybrid I presume ?

VF35 can surge if you pull it in hard, so perhaps it is aimed at that.

Does the STi intercooler really have 2psi less drop. Has somebody done any tests... would be interested in these if they have (have the Autospeed test of classic intercoolers already).

Still don't think it warrants spending £350ish on the intercooler for 300bhp tho . Or can you get them cheaper now? If you spend that you could say why not spend £170 on Megan racing headers and gain the same power for less boost???? As Andy has said so many many wonderful ways to get 300bhp

I really miss my STi8 Intercooler

I sold it in order to buy an APS FMIC so I'm currently running my original bugeye WRX intercooler..... not nice

WRX rich............ My car going into Roger Clark Motorsport for Headers, Induction, Up pipe, APS FMIC fitting and fitting a Deadbolt TD05 18G turbo from Andy

Olly at RCMS more than happy with the 18G

what power you aiming for, be nice to really test the gearbox's , Im sat looking at a vf35 and sti top mount thinking may be I should have gone big, time will tell

Im thinking

sti topmount
sti injectors
vf35
rogerclark induction

on top of the headers full exhaust should go 320 / 320 on the right rollers but I like the idea of a quick spool up,

Rich

The 18G can theoretically run more midrange boost earlier on a 2.0 (1.6 bar at 3600 on the 20G and up to 2 bar at the same rpm on the 18G)
The 18G will fall approx 20bhp behind the 20G at the top end, making it still capable of being a 400bhp turbo on octane booster.

Andy ...want a pic

Soon to land on a few Imprezas on this BBS

TD05 18g sounds a good compromise, and seems easier to fit in by the gearbox, etc not being so big on the cold side or sticky out wastegate actuator...!

And no surging or boost creep issues with TD05 18g Andy ?

Still curious what a std WRX internals will take boost wise, properly mapped!

Andy... do a search on ebay for 'subaru manifold' or similar, you'll find an international seller doing them for about $220-$240 buy now. If you e-mail him for a price he will do it shipped to the UK for £170ish all in (but you may get stung for tax).

Carl Davey has just orded said set
