BIG ENGINE TROUBLE??????
can anybody tell me what has happened to my car?
my car is a 1997 r/reg wrx sti type-r import.
i went to donnington park to a track day last sunday 20/02/2005
before i got there i filled up with optimax but never had any trouble
i did ten laps and my brake pads dissintegrated
however this is'nt the problem, i came home in the car, parked on my drive it never missed a beat, then the next morning got up for work started the car, it was running fine and i was reversing off my drive on tickover and it stalled, from this point onwards i have tried to start the car
for two days and it just keeps popping?
my mate has towed me round for two miles and it just keeps backfiring
is there a condensor anywhere as i have had simular trouble with an old escort mark 2 that did exactly the same thing but ten years ago and a condensor cured it
help would be greatly appreciated
I HAVE NOW FOUND THE PROBLEM, THE CAMBELT HAD SLIPPED ON THE CAM WITH THE SENSOR, I AM IN THE PROCESS OF REPLACING THE CAMBELT I DONT KNOW IF I HAVE ANY SERIOUS DAMAGE YET I WILL LET YOU KNOW A.S.A.P.. I THINK WITH MANOVERING THE CAR AT LOW REVS AND A COLD ENGINE CAUSED IT TO BACKFIRE AND LOCKED THE ENGINE CAUSING IT TO THROW THE CAM, I WAS TOLD THE ENGINE HAD JUST BEEN REBUILT, BUT AND ITS A BIG BUT THE CAM BELT IS WORN AND IT LOOKS LIKE A CHEEP IMMITATION
IF YOU WANT SOMETHING DOING, DO IT YOURSELF THEN RELAX?????

Not running but occassionally popping I'd guess at cam or crank position sensor having failed. Others may have better ideas.

Has the timing belt been checked?..could have jumped teeth causing the valve timing to move..this would cause popping through inlet(air filter) or backfiring down the exhaust.
Hope it aint the belt, for your sake!!
Good luck..

Was there any "mechanical" noises as the car stalled??or as you was towing the car around?
As said could be crank position sensor also..needs to be checked out buy a pro really, gone are the days of messing about yourself if you aont sure what your doing.
