There is a special socket you can buy (its longer than normal and has an open area on one side to keep the wires out of the way). If you are happy cutting the wires you should be able to get away with a normal socket (not sure what size). Chances are it will be tight after all the heat cycles. I got one out of an early WRX quite easily, I did have to remove the heatshield though. I had to do the same on a 200sx and the bugger was stuck so tight I just sold the car!

Cheers for the replies guys! I'll give the 22mm ring spanner a go. Dont fancy removeing the heatshield though I've got a good soldering iron, so hopefully I'll sort it this weeknd! PS, Is it better to remove it when stone cold, or warm it up a litte????

What year is your car? If Phase 1.5/2 then the lambda is in the downpipe - if so, spray some penetrating fluid on it over night and a 22mm ring spanner will work a treat.
Not sure on the phase 1 cars though!

On my 96 MY97 Sti the sensor is plugged into the loom just by the gearbox.
If you can, dissconnect the plug in the loom, the 22mm ring spanner will allow the plug to pass through it and you can then securely get to grips with the sensor body.
Getting to it with the shield in place may be demanding though, just as much as removing the shield is for the first time ouch, my nuckles are still hurting...

DOH! Sounds like fun, BUT, it needs doing, so on with the thick gloves, and hopefully the lovely little lambda will be as loose as my bowls where on Sunday, after a Madras on Saturday night
