Question problems to watch for with full decat?

Eventually I've cracked and have a full decat on its way for my '97 UK turbo H&S 2.5"

I know ideally, I should remap but funds don’t allow

So what problems should I be watching out for with the full decat and how best to monitor these

Fuel ratio : does this tend to run lean/rich after decat?

Detonation: more likely? Is only way to tell with a knocklink ?

Boost : boost spikes/creep?

If these things do start happening how can you sort them? (Without remap)

if you fit lots of instruments ,how do you manage to keep an eye on all the gauges while flying along through the twistys?

I would need beeps or flashes to tell me I was over boosting etc.

A nice set of defi's would be nice to monitor things but almost the price of a nice new Andy F Apexi !! :Q:confused;

Is there any other (much cheaper) gauges with warnings available?

Always run on optimax and warmed up/down, green panel filter and NO VTA dump valve

Oh and I know about the mot problem

You will not need a remap, gauges or knocklink with just a decat on a uk car, mine has a bigger turbo, decat, panel filter and 300ish bhp with no remap and no gauges.

Other people will disagree but I have run it like this for 20,000 miles now and had the fuelling check twice and its all spot on.

people are just being cautious. If yous blows up then you might blame poor AP. Mind you he might not give a flying ****

You only need to start watching things when you play with boost. De-cat should be fine on your car. Mine has been (MY99 though) and I've no guages now either

Stefan

P.S. when you say you've no dump valve I assume you mean you don't have a naff atmosphere one and still run the std item?

lol yeah youre right mate ,no phhhsss here i will edit
someone else posted to say" You'll get boost spikes on a UK MY97 as it uses the 2-port solenoid. It'll go to about 1.2 bar and then come back and settle at 1.05 bar (more boost due to less backpressure). You might need to open the restrictor nipple in the compressor outlet boost control hose a little ie, from 1mm to 1.1mm)
KnockLink would be a good idea as well as an accurate boost gauge..........be ready in case the fuel cut kicks in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My MY97 Sti would overboost after re-map - after hitting fuel cut when overtaking I fitted a Blitz Boost controller and Knocklink.

Boost set at 1.25 bar (Optimax + Millers) - ran for 50k without problems before I part-exchanged her - Knocklink only ever lit 2 greens at full blatt!

I'm thinkig on the same upgrade, full decat but no mapping, and I asked a few guys from the Subaru garage. The anser I got: "don't do it, we see lots of car going wrong". For one they say that there is some sensor which will not work properly and could cause other problems. They said to go for the PPP only.

So I really don't know if I should do it; Anyway warranty is off I guess if I'd do this, so maybe I should wait a bit.

full decat and dumpvalve, runs excellent. no gauges.fuelling is spot on when checked and boost is standard 0.8. you will hear of certain dumpvalves giving a lumpy idle and various other complications but my bailey is fine. other people will also tell you to get a knocklink anyway, but i ran mine with a faulty maf sensor for a month(was told i would blow the engine up) and no difference. all cars are different but the advice is out there.
