Question Noisy starting.. ? help :(

(Car is MY00)

When turning the car over, just recently it makes a horrible high pitched 'choked' kind of noise.. the noise ceases once the engine has caught.

first thought- power steering? AC belt?

but- after getting the wife to turn it over, with my head under the bonnet- it seems that the whine is nearer the gearbox area.. (looking at the engine head on, on the RHS, behind and somewhere near the gearbox....

Is this the starter motor?
If it is- Are they an expensive thing to replace/fix?
argh.

(Had a few gremlins emerge the last few months.. this is just the latest)

Does sound like the starter motor to me!

Not sure of price/difficulty on a Scoob tho, cant see it being too much tho!

Very easy to change especially as you have no TMIC.. if it is the Start motor..

it might continue with a slight noise for months / years though..

www.hdcsubaru.com for a nice secondhand one?
