Buying a scooby
Not really sure if this is the correct forum to post in, but....
A mate of mine has recently purchased an old Evo 2, and we got talking about these types of cars (scoobies, etc) and he said to me why dont you have a look into buying a Impreza turbo instead of buying a Mondeo ST200. I was willing to pay about £6500 for the mondeo and about £2000 insurence (Yes im only 19, but will have 2 years no claims when i come to buy my next car) and he said that I could get an impreza for 5k or under.
I had a look on autotrader and found a couple that i like http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/WWW...ch_full=SEARCH (4th one from the bottom)
Now, i havnt owned a car like this before and was wondering is it really wise to buy a turbo car that has 60,70 or 80,000 miles on the clock or doesnt it matter if it has been regularly serviced etc?
Also, what do i need to look for when buying a car like this, in terms of the mechanical side of things etc
Im pretty young so insuring this type of car might be a problem, I had a quote from tesco for the mondeo, which is a group 18 car and it came out as £2200, i thought this was a decent price, but thought I could get a better deal with Adrian Flux (I will be phoning insurence tommorow if i have time). Now i looked at the group of the impreza and the Turbo 2000 is a group lower than the mondeo at 17. It probbly doesnt work like this, but i was a bit hopeful that the cost of insuring a scooby would be around the same price??? or i could be (and probably am) way off the mark
Is there any other insurence companies that you might think would give me a decent quote on this car?
Any help will be apprciated

With 70k on the clock it'll be needing a new clutch sooner rather than later if not already done. A UK car with FSH will give some peace of mind at that mileage. Big service will be at 90k which will be about £800-£900 at a Subaru dealer
For insurance have a look at A-Plan - they get good recommendations in the Insurance Forum
Regardless, there are so many about at the moment you can aford to be really choosy.

On a general note: I've said it before mate, but I really wouldn't advise buying a Scooby on a budget. Theses are expensive cars to own (insurance is just the start) and if you don't look after them, you're looking at BIG bills. For example, The WRX is an import and will require optimax and octane booster to run properly.
There are a whole host of better deals out there for that kind of budget.
Sorry to be glum!

But, yes at the moment it's just a pipe dream because i havnt got a quote yet, but wil be doing that soon.
Im going to avoid imports as the insurance is going to be silly, im going to stick with the Turbo 2000 (group 17).
Petrol really isnt an issue, I share lifts in work, so i drive one week, mate drives the next etc, so I wont be using the car every day of the week.
Im considering a scooby also, because i will be buying it (if i can get insurance) around july time (when im 19), and 2 months later I will be getting a pay rise in work (nearly £200 a month extra). So i will be oright with the running costs etc.
Thanks for the advice anyway, I will have a little read of that site.

Just had a quick flick through that site, (very informative by the way), and i noticed the bit about Adjusting/inspecting/replacing and checking, i looked at the 46k+ services and notced wuite a bit needs to be checked/inspected etc. This may sound like a stupid question, but when i go to service is the people who service it will automatically check the things required and these service intervals?

Why don't you get a scooby, run it for a while and if it is too expensive, sell it! They are fantastic cars and you will always find money to run/ repair/ modify if you really like it. It simply does not compare to a Modeo!!! Good luck!

Make no bones about it,it could cost you packet if it goes belly up and big items need replacing but if you get you servicing done by a reputable garage(oil, filters, brakes, etc) and do a bit of asking round you may get the clutch done for £250-300 if it needs doing but it might be OK.The big dealer service isnt worth it on older cars it wont affect the resale price to much and sub 5k it certainly wont..main thing is does it drive well, does it look straight and does the guy selling it seem honest..instinct mate its the best guide. regards powerman
