Default Poor running and lack of revs over 4k RPM> Any ideas?

Hi there,
I have an MY99 5dr turbo, and it has cut out on me a couple of times. It will not rev over 4,000 RPM and the "check engine" light came on yesterday.
Just been to my local garage but their diagnostic kit doesn't work on this car, and they have suggested going to Subaru, but I want to avoid spending a fortune.
Does anyone have any ideas what it might be or who I could go to? it just stutters and shudders over 4,000 RPM.
Many thanks.

probably MAF failure, seems quite common on cars of your year.

If you have the check engine light on the car will go into limp mode, this means fuel cut once you achieve any sort of amount of boost or revs.

The best description of fuel cut is like driving into an invisible brick wall - this is pretty accurate.

If it's fuel cut you're experiencing then you need to find the cause of the CEL, there's a proceure for pulling out the code using the 2 diagnostic connectors under the steering wheel. Do a search for CEL should yield results.

If it's just running pretty ****e after 4,000 rpm then things to look for are;

Air leak somewhere between the turbo and the throttle body
Plugs/HT Leads/Coil pack
MAF

Hi there,

Thanks for all your advice. Rang Priven in Haslemere and they have offered me a free diagnostic test. So I will let you know the results.
Thanks again.
