Default MY03 WRX Oil ..... where's it gone??

Hi Folks

got a MY03 WRX which I have owned for 3 months and has the sum total of 16.7k on the clock. In the last 1000 miles it has used ........ 2 litres of the black stuff. It does not appear to be burning it ..... now big clouds of smoke, not leaking it (well no drips on the driveway) and it has had mainly motorway use where it's driven pretty steadily 80 - 90mph.

I have had other little niggles with the car also nothing major but stuff that the dealer (Holdcroft) should have sorted without issue ..... but always appeared a bit to much trouble for them.

Big question is, where could the oil be going?? it's under warranty so I am going to insist the dealer check it out as I reckon that is pretty excessive for a standard low mile WRX. I am also going to test drive a Fabia VRs on Saturday and am seriously thinking of offloading my Impreza as the dealer service is .......................................... ****e.

Thanks in advance for any input folks

Cheers

Tony

this may sound odd but are you 100% sure its low?

reason i say is that a few times ive checked the dipstick and seen it as being low so topped up.....it did this twice so i probably added around 1ltr of oil, now i find its actually got too much in it!its a bizarre situation, but just check again. Im going to have to drain some out at the weekend.

I have the same car as you with 30k on the clock. albeit in a far from standard state of tune....

check the level when cold, should be down to first hole or between the 2 holes on dipstick, when hot upper hole

First hole is "Min" Should be top hole cold, notch hot.
2ltrs in 1000 miles is really excessive! How many times have you topped it up in that period?

Always checked it cold and on a level surface and have been doing it weekly since the first big gulp of oil. I have been topping up because it has read on the bottom edge of the bottom hole from cold. after top ups it is midway between the holes. It's had 4 slurps in the last month which was around 1000 miles.

is there a catch bottle somewhere or does it blow oil into the airbox if a crank vent is blocked? just guessing as most of my engine experience is from 2 wheeled beasties.

One possibility I can think of is that the dealer upon selling it just did a swift oil / filter change and dropped a bollock on quantities. Going to do an oil change myself this weekend (Non **** type after reading various threads LOL) and then monitor the consumption again from then.

As a general rule of thumb, are most main dealers crap??? not a snipe just after a general opinion.

Cheers

I bought my 2003 WRX last Sept. With just under 10K miles it had a service book stamped - checked the oil next week - none on the dipstick !

Back it went - comment was, all checked nothing found oil was fine - weired ? They did say to me that Subaru(this was a main dealer) recommended filling the engine with oil half way between the minimum and maximum holes on the dipstick.

Any comments ?

Can only talk for the ones up in Scotland who are excellent. My general impression the Subaru Dealer network is at the top of the pile. I've had some so called prestige cars and the service was shoite.

Think your doing the right thing btw... ( non **** of course) my money is on it was underfilled to start with.

Tony,

Same with my MY03. Mine was using 1Ltr per 1500-2000 miles!!

Dealer told me that it was within the usage parameters and were not too bothered...

Spoke with a few well know specialist and the conclusion was that some use oil and some dont. Noubt wrong with the engine, just the way it is.
Makes you lift the bonnet once a week or fortnight... which isnt a bad thing.
