Default MAF Cleaning - Surprise

I serviced my TDI leon on Friday evening, with 100,000 on the clock decided to have a look at how clean the MAF was or wasn't. Both the mesh and the wire looked clean but gave it a squirt with the Clutch and Brake cleaner anyhow as I had some bits off the car and had the tools out.

On saturday, decided to give the impreza the same treatment cleaning the MAF, Boost solenoid, checking all the hoses and plug lead resistance for reference. Was shocked by the buildup of oil and contamination on the mesh and on the wire itself. There is only 40,000 on the Impreza, so was expecting to see little or nothing for the comparatively low mileage. The mesh looked like the exhaust on my motor, almost as if it had a coating of carbon on it.

Haven't noticed any difference since the cleaning, think I might include this as a check at service intervals or every other service.

TT
