Question Low boost pressure?

I have a MY00 UK classic. I've felt for sometime now that it's down on power, it started after the last time it was in for a service (main dealers) I mentioned that I had experienced it cutting out when on boost on odd occasions. I suggested the typical overboost/fuel cut scenario. Anyway they did something to cure it but when questioned I was told that the fuel cut level was too low and had been adjusted. This was news to me, as far as I understand it this is part of the ECU map and cannot be changed without the ECUTek software, not something main dealers have access to

After a while I decided that perhaps it was all in my mind, the car is still pretty rapid. However a few things of late now have me convinced there is a problem after all.

First off I fitted a boost gauge. I can only get it to peak at 0.7 bar, WOT from low revs in 4/5th. It is however a cheapo mechanical gauge and I'm told they're not that accurate.

Secondly it went on the rollers last weekend (PowerStation) and only made just over 199 bhp It is fairly standard: H&S backbox and de-cat centre, SAMCO turbo hose kit, and the AE802 replaced with an AE801 ECU. I was expecting something nearer to the quoted 215bhp standard figure.

I has had a new MAF recently probably due to paranoia, Knocklink is quiet.

So any ideas? Would a gunged up boost solenoid cause loss of boost? I know overboosting is usually a symptom of this. MAP sensor over reading? Leaking dumpvalve (OEM)? All the hoses are tight and shouldn't be leaking.

Or should I leave it to the experts? It's due a service and now out of warranty so probably going to leave it to my local specialist to look after. Hopefully they will have a better clue than the dealships

Cheers for any advice/help.

Didn't some else on here recently report boost related problems and had their suspicions confirmed on a RR where their car also made 199bhp. IIRC correctly the problem was that the turbo was basically past its best. How many miles does your car have on it?

If in doubt, take it to a specialist and have it looked over, chances are they'll find the prob quicker than the dealers!

It has just over 60k miles on it. Certainly hope the turbo isn't shagged, thought they were supposed to last a bit longer than that

Don't panic yet mate. It might not be the turbo and someting much more simple/less expensive.

at 60k it wouldn't be too unreasonable for a turbo to be past its best, depends how hard its been used I guess! Look on the bright side, if it has gone, it's a perfect excuse to get a bigger one and a remap!
