Default Cat on fire light????

Hi all,
one of my mates has a problem with a Prelude vtec, he has just had his exhaust manifold welded and a light on the dash has come on, i presume its the cat on fire one( like a flattened circle with 2 squigly lines coming off it). ever since that, the car is running badly, wont pull under hard acceleration, just splutters. is there any way of bypassing the sensor with a resistor etc or best just to get a new sensor/cat? replaced the lambda already. the problem didnt start at once, but came to light after a few days. the flexi pipe was split badly too, but now this problem has been fixed. could an ecu reset help (if it is the same as scoobys)....

Thanks in advance

Adam
