Default Cooling System & Header Tank - Help

Hi guys

I've had a few problems with the header tank on my scooby (MY98)

There is a little pipe that enters the header tank on it's neck just below the screw cap. This pipe has broken away. I've managed to do a fix using a liquid weld and it's seems to have been very successful.

One thing I'm a little bemused with! This little pipe, I'm assuming it's a return pipe, enters the header tank ABOVE the screw cap's seal. If I'm correct in thinking it's a return pipe, hows does the returned water get into the system?

More likely it's an overflow pipe taking water away. The pipe travels forward and attaches to a black metal pipe on top of the radiator.

Just interested to know what this does.

John

PS What can I expect to pay for an alloy header tank?
