Hmm...this knocking noise appears to be coming from the drivers side of the engine towards the back.....It makes the noise mostly at tickover amd it goes quiter as the revs get higher.

My best description of the noise is a saucepan thats got boiling water in it with a metal lid...kind of chattering?

I'll jack the car up tonight and see if it's louder underneath.

The car boosts and runs fine.

Cheers,

Paul.

One more question...

How hard is it to take the engine out and the heads off etc to inspect for any damage? I've never worked on an impreza before, but I've rebuilt a few mr2 turbo's(which are a PITA to work on!!).

I'm thinking of taking a week off of work to sort this out....Are bearings and pistons etc, easy to source?? If so, where from?

What do you guys think?

Cheers,

Paul.

Sounds suspect.

Might be worth draining/filtering the oil from the sump and looking for particles of copper, then remove engine if neccessary.

If it turns out to be big end failure then your looking at a new/reground crank, set of bearings, possibly new rod if the bearing has spun, oil/water cooler and maybe more depending on condition.

Sounds like it could be the turbo since that is where its located. I had a problem with mine whereby some part of the turbo was worn (sorry am not too technical) and the result was a loud "ticking" sound under 2000 rpm. It required replacement of the turbo, I sourced a used one.

Cheers,

Sounds like one of your big end bearings has picked up.

I'm currently rebuilding mine.

Its a set of bearings ( main and big end )£343 from RCMS with 3 bond paste for engine block and about £300 quid for all the gastkets and seals.

Its an engine out and then strip down job. Remember its a boxer engine i.e horizontally opposed. It doesnt have a cylinder block it has two block halves.
Here's a pic of mine fully stripped... again lol

If it was big end failure, surely it would make the noise all the time though? This seems intermittent.

cheers,

Paul.

Paul, there was nothing wrong with the performance of my turbo, just that some part of it was on the way out.

I had lots of advice that it was the engine gone, in the end it cost me £100 for a used turbo plus fitting.

How much for bearings?!!!
What kind are they?!

Lets just say i got some ACL big end and main bearings considerably cheaper.

Hi,

Problem has gone!!

Looks like re-gapping the plugs has stopped a slight missfire, which in turn has stopped the manifold/turbo heat shield rattling! lol!!

I'm a muppet sometimes..worryong over nothing.
