Default Turbo 2000 Reliability

Im looking into Getting a Turbo 2000 (cant insure an import) but i have heard that the big end likes to go along with clutches and gearboxes? Just wondering what they are like on reliability? will be a 1997 to 1998. I had a 300 ZX for about 4 months and that was terrable! Gearbox went in that as did the driveshafts. Any info would be much apriciated.

They're like anything else really, Performance = £ pounds ..
Most mildly tuned scoobs are as reliable as any other when treated with respect but depending whats been done and whos had it before are 2 things to consider..
A bit like my miss'is really

Yeah not looking to get huge power out of it, just full exhaust, induction kit and a re-map. think that will return around 250 bhp maby? Yeah i dont hack the nuts out my cars anyway, but just dont want to have to lay out money all the time like i had to do in my 300 ZX as that was just rediculious.

Hi Dannyboy,
I have a 98 uk classic and had it since november,I've had few problems the cars great.
Make sure you get one with service history I lokked at quite a few before the one I bought and to look at the werent bad but as I looked closer they were terrible and hadn't been looked after.
I test drove one from a garage we pulled in to blow the tyre up and there was black smoke belching from the turbo.
Another one looked fantastic looked as if it had been well looked after until I test drove it what a plug.
The one I bought had FSSH 53000 miles a brand new decated, exhaust new Alpine head unit and changer, tracker and cat 1 alarm.
I wasn't sure about getting one as I had heard horror stories but I am soooo glad I did.

Best of luck with your search mate.

What sort of thing should i look for then? I mean the usual stuff like slipping clutch, funny oil colour, ticking/knocking, but what about serious things? EG stuff that can possibly cost a crap load to fix if not noticed early?

Watch out for the MY98 Uk models as they sufferd alot from pistion slap, alot were fixed by subaru under warrenty but the fix is a new short block.

If you can strech to it try and get a MY99/00 car as they had a few upgrades into that model year like four pot front callipers off the sti and a slight power hike to 215bhp.

I have a MY99 UK Turbo2000 and it's the best car i have ever had, not standard now but i really like it.

Well I can't seem to kill mine at the moment.
Ther power has steadily been increasing from a poor PPP output (220bhp) from when I bought it 3-4 years ago at 19,000 miles
Well a couple of weeks ago I screwed 448bhp out of it on race gas and it's still together. (although it is back on Optimax now hovering just below 400bhp.
In it's whole life in my ownership the only standard part to fail was the Lambda sensor.

Admitedly I killed the box when the power took a big hike last year and I've smoked an organic clutch as well, but in standard form I think these cars are very reliable.

Don't look for anything mate; get a professional to do it for you. With all due respect to you, you really must not take a 'tyre kicker' approach to these cars, as there are duds out there -which will cost you dearly- and even ones in perfect working order still require readies to run. A few rules:

-Full inspection and HPI check is a must. Either Subaru or specialist.
-FSh a must either Subaru or reputable specialist
-Speak to the owner, ask them to take you for a spin... do they warm the car up before extending it? Do they let it cool off? All clues as to the kind of life its had. Do they know what grade oil is in it, what petrol have they run it on?
-As few owners as possible...see above!
-No mods or evidence that mods undertaken have been done intelligently and by experts...beware the insurance implications of modded cars.

If they've been looked after, they're generally very reliable, the known weakspot on My99/00 is the Maf sensor...not expensive, but you have to be vigilant for the signs of it failing as driving hard with a dodgy maf can kill the engine.

Most engine failures occur with imports (running on wrong grade fuel), or with UK cars that have had a MAF fail that has gone unnoticed or just had the nuts ragged off it, or not been looked after properly.

All the best with your search.
