i have newer car but always use optimax (have put super in twice when couldn't find a shell garage!) if the car you have has only ever been run on unleaded then if you start using super/optimax then it will take a while for the car to get used to the better fuel.
i understand that although super is more expensive, your mpg is improved so this makes it better value than it looks, also improves power

You wont have any problems running a UK car on unleaded (2000 turbo or new age wrx, both without PPP) BUT, you will benefit more from running super unleaded or an equivelent, due to better pickup, smoother, better economy (believe it or not!) so you can choose, its an extra 3p spent but you get it back in the above.
