What Oil To Use?
What oil does my scooby like?
My mate is doing my service on my newly acquired '98 Turbo. He says his garage uses 10w40 semi-synthetic Mobil oil on all the cars they service. I'm new to all this Subaru stuff (and a bit rubbish with cars), is this oil good enough?
Thanks

If its not fully synt, its not good for a impreza, with its high pressures, and temperatures demand. The oil just dont keep up, looses integrity and cant lubricate, refrigerate engine/turbo, and a blown engine appears.
Very important to choose a good oil, with correct grad for our babies....Motul is good, Castrol also. For that matter ill recomend agains supermarket shelf oils, because they are formulated to be low cost (many times) and not especifically for an high demanding engine.

so? I gave him an honest and technical opinion, not the daybefore grass dinner of a ruminant. Maybe you can do the same?
Saw those GUNK BLACK oil deposits that semi sync or mineral oil form near turbo that can clog oil tubes passes etc on scoobys....
Oil in my scooby is like blood running in vains, if you expect long engine life...the oil is EVERYTHING!
So u always used semi? Good for you! That is the kind of reply info we were all expecting to read...

AFAIK, fully synthetic is generally recommended, as it will last longer between changes (due to being more sheer stable than semi synth etc) due to being more shear stable. Semi Synth is not a crime to use, you just will need to keep up with oil changes (although some HGV semi Synth oils have a recommended inspection rate of 100,000 Km's). Personally I use Castrol RS 10/60 (which is fully synth), and change it every 3k miles - if I had been using a semi synth oil and replacing at these intervals, I suspect that I would not have had a problem either!
IMHO if you scoob takes a bit of abuse (track days etc), then you may be better off going for a fully synth, as it will take more abuse before shearing.
Wouldn't say that sticking with "known" brands is always a must, as My old man used to use an oil (forgot the brand/name) for his work that was technically a better oil than any others on the market, but they had to stop producing it, as people would not purchase it above Mobil 1, which was the market leader at the time!
I would say more important than fully/semi synth would be the viscosity ratings!

"i would go for MOTUL 10w50, have been using this for 2years... no problem at all"
Hi,
is this one from the 300V "family" ( I think it's 300V ).
Once I used Total 10w50 full synth and when I drove a little hard the oil got out through the dawes, then I changed to Visco 5w40 full synth and have no problem.
do you think the brand as something to do with it?

I“d say a 5w-40 would be a bit thin when hot.
I currently have castrol 10w-60, thicker cold starting though, not so good. I“m going to change to motul 15w-50, but my car is quite tuned and had a hard life.
Personally I wouldn“t use silkolene, but thats just my opinion based on what I know of oil and what i“ve read on here. A lot of knowlegable people will disagree with me on this one.
For a standard uk car I would say fully synyth 10w-40, semi or mineral doesn“t have the same qualities with regards to sheer strength and high temperature operation. Having said that if my car was standard I would use catrol 10w-60 (I“m really careful about warming it up where a lot of people wouldn“t be).
As people have said you can put anything you want in, but take care. Olive oil or fanta“s probably not a good choice.

5w-40,10w-40,10w-50
Impreza 2.5i 4WD 2001 onwards
5w-30 or 5w-40
Impreza 2.0i WRX/STi Turbo 2001 onwards
5w-30 or 5w-40
Impreza 2.0i Turbo 1994-00
5w-40,10w-40,10w-50
Impreza 2.0 4WD 2000 onwards
5w-30 or 5w-40
Impreza 1.6i, 1.8i 4WD 1993-96
5w-40,10w-40 or 10w-50
These are for stock road cars. If the car is modded or used on track and seeing excessive oil temps (above 120degC) then a an sae 50 is adviseable.
