Default O2 sensor reading

Tapped into the o2/lambda sensor0 line on the ecu to find out how my fueling is. Read a link that said by putting a volt metre to it I could find out whats going on. apparently .5 volt is about right. more is rich, less is lean. The reading i got was all over the place , from 0 to 1. up and down like a yo yo. I assume this is how afr gauges work. Any ideas how to make sense of it?
