Default Do I need a knocklink?

Picked up my 04WRX on monday, I use nothing but Optimax in my cars, have done so for the past 6 years (apart from the diesel) car has not been re-mapped (although will be soon) so in effect it is totally standard.

I have seen Knocklink this and Knocklink that since browsing this board, the question is DO I NEED ONE? Bearing in mind that they car will be chipped in about 6 weeks.

In my opinion, no you dont need one.

Alot of the big power guys have them on here as their cars are no longer have the power their cars were originally set up for, and need monitoring.

i am upping my boost to 1.1 bar on a 96 wrx.standard boost is 0.9bar.do i need a knocklink?what pressure can i run without getting fuel cut or detonation?

A knocklink only allows you to moniter knocking/pinking. It does not stop it. If you are worried fit one. OR, get it mapped properly for a certain fuel..

i even think even if it is mapped, it is worth having one, as sometime you can have a bad batch of fuel, or if you have a extra hard drive (track days etc) it is worth just keeping a eye on it. not losing anything by having one

In my opinion, No you dont NEED a knocklink.

The newage ECU deals with this much more effectively than the older classic ECU's. The newage ECU will quite happily adjust the ignition timing to lower octane fuels if needed - it has various 'learned' maps in addition to the standard map, whether thats the factory map or a bespoke map.

When I first got my car i noticed most of the posts regarding knocklinks were older classic ecu's rather than the newage.

If you would feel happier fitting one then do it.

the car is a classic wrx turbo ver 3(facelift) 1996
its not a question of feeling happier.i am going to up the boost to 1.1 bar but i dont really know what a knocklink is but have read posts of people saying it is essential when using a dawes device which i have.i am using the dawes device to up the boost to 1.1 bar.i want a safe level without fuel cut or fookin my car up.

Knock/pinking/Det = Engine knocking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Knock link just tells you if detonation is occurring, doesn't stop it, doesn't change ignition timing to deal with it - just gives you pretty lights so you can back off and seek advice (hopefully) before any piston damage etc occurs.

I was answering the original post which is regarding an 04 newage.

If you run a JDM classic, yes id go for a knocklink, if you run a highly modified car, yes id run a knocklink, if the car is standard/virtually standard (uk), no there is no need for a knocklink.

Highly modified can be 320-350bhp on a uk wrx or classic (dodgy pistons ) even so, its as stated, an indication rather than anything else, if your harsh on your gear changes you could probably get a standard classic to light up a knocklink, always thought thats why they had a sensitivity dial on top

What do you mean by chipped???

Stay well away from any "chipping". Get a proper remap on the very capable stock ECU, or don't bother.

Knocklinks are OTT for a std car, but advisable once the car is re-mapped for a certain grade of fuel, if nothing else it'll let you know if you get a bad batch. My Classic 99 is running 320bhp and the knocklink is quite capable of distinguishing knock from std engine/transmission noise.

When it comes to Det, which can cost you an engine very quickly, it's better to be safe (and called an "SN ****") than sorry (with a very big credit card bill, but with the esteem of the Anti - SN **** crowd on here). You'll fid that the latter group will be reluctant to reimburse you should your pride and joy go pop!!

What level is highly modified?

I'm thinking of getting one, just to be safe(r).


And while we're at it, are they all the same? Or are there better ones available??

depends, if you have a spar £150 prob worth it if your planning to keep the car a while.

fair enough you might not ever use, but the one time you get a dodgy batch of fuel etc it shows it and it can save your engine.

but as said you may never ned it, but personally i wouldn't be without mine now

It's like insurance: you get one, hoping you won't see it in action!

Subaru engines aren't cheap, £150 well spent IMHO.

most places do, try Scooby Clinic | The UK's Largest Independent Subaru Specialists | 01246 590 807 - Chesterfield S42 6QX, bear in mind though they need setting up to work properly, you can't just plug and go as it were

Couldn't find it on their website.

Setting up? Please explain. It is a garage fitting it anyway, so they should "setup"?

i run a very heavily modified car and i dont use a knocklink !! why have something light up just before my engine fails

I've ordered one from Mocom (and inlet temp gauge)

Can you actually save the engine? Ie. lights up, stop and seek help.

Or is it too late by the time it lights up, stop, seek AA & Bank Loan.

if it lights up on a normal engine id say you would be ok but mine is in the 500's so if it decided to go red on me i think i would be in trouble
