Mine's the same - Not particularly visable in sunlight.
Shame they didn't make it with a VFD - would have looked much better.
Unless you're an electronics wiz and can replace the LCD, i shouldn't think there's much you can do with it?

The LED itself is very easy to remove though. I may have a look at RS to see what can be done to improve this shoddy design.

If it is a back lit lcd display, changing the small lamp for a slightly higher current lamp will improve brightness. You have to be careful that you dont go overboard with increasing the brightness due to extra heat being given off from the lamp.

Keep me posted on how you get on...
I'd like to improve mine too.
Someone over on RX7 Club managed to get their screen to display in blue/white...This might be of interest to you...

Thought it was a LCD screen ... yeah I lose most of the display visibility in sunlight and mine is dead ahead of me behind steering wheel!
Same with my Origin b2 too!

Right then, CPC and RS do a replacement panel for this type of LCD lighting. I will be taking the commander apart later to find out the dimensions before I order a couple. They cost £12 ish each, so not too bad.
I am thinking about separating the screen from the keypad anyway to make a Din size display with the buttons to the side. I may use a 5v supply sourced from the side lights to power the LED independantly. We will see.

Ok, I have found what I think I need for this little project.
The link below shows the type of backlight needed, but they dont seem to do the correct size.
The one needed for the FC Commander is 70x37mm and is 2mm thick. Anyone know where to get these from before I start pestering CPC/Farnell. A range of colours would also be good.
