Question Classic Sti buying advice

Hi guys,
I've not long sold my RB5 WR Sport, and I'm already craving another Impreza!!
But this time I've decided to go for an early Sti (my mate imports them!) ......................

Only problem is, I don't really know what the difference is between a WRX Sti v2, v3 and v4?

Can anyone help me please and offer me some guidance!!

Thanks guys!

Jumbo, I'm not even close to knowledgeable on these things but, the sidc website (www.sidc.co.uk) has a very good faq that should answer alot of questions. Also, if you mate imports them you should;
1. buy him a pint.
2. tell him what your thinking of getting
3. See what he would recommend or could source

hope you find what your looking for.

Thanks for that - but I can't seem to find anywhere that details the differences between each Sti version, and where ones do have a model report and which ones don't!?

Any more ideas?

off the top of my scrambled brain:

v2's are prefacelift, 275bhp with a teenie slanty intercooler which will need changing if you want much more than 300bhp. a lot cheaper than v3s.

v3 has the bigger intercooler, 280bhp (possibly higher but subaru claimed 280) and more torque, facelifted front end and red/white rear lights.

v4 is very similar to v3 but has a new improved interior.

oh, and a lot of v2s don't have 4pots and any spirited driving will see plumes of smoke and/or death.

IMHO I like them all but always swayed by the facelifted bonnet ala V3 & the V4 uprated dash.

V4's can be had for around the same cash as overpriced v2 & v3's ... then again a car is worth what someone is willing to pay. Best go for the car with the paperwork & taken care off... seen some imac examples of early sti's .. and some old sh1tter later models.. worn bushes.. smokey...

Best of luck, just came back to the fold myself... and was looking over the last couple of weeks myself. A few about and the V3's can just scrape through without SVA hence a few around..

Thanks guys - very helpful.

But are we now saying that v4's CAN BE registered here no problem (ie. they do have a model report)?

Why not simply buy an Stiv3 that is already here, on the road, and 'established?
I bought my Sti v3 nearly 4 years ago for 11K, bone stock and registered all ok and a very nice car.
The 'new' interior on the v4 is a vast improvement.

If you want to read-up on them all go to a big Halfords today and buy the Haynes specialist book on the Impreza. All the basic details are there.

Place a wanted ad in the 'Wanted' section, your budget and your spec ie Stock or modified and sit back. They will come to you.

You will have to travel to see them all, but I am sure stock minters are there in abundance.

Mine is all modified, mollested and abused now but a massive move forward on overall performance (407 bhp etc)

Good luck, I think you can find a good deal out there, just be careful.

Graham.

V3 and V4 look the best out of all the classics IMO

Thanks for your advice guys!

I understand totally what your saying about getting one that is already here to avoid the hassle - but the thing is, they are going for about 2k-3k more than what I could get my mate to import one for me!!
Plus since we've sold the RB5, the missus has already 'allocated' a large amount of the money to things around the house - so my budget is pretty low!!

I have seen a couple of minters for sale over here for between 7-8k, but I really can't afford this unfortunately (my budget is more like 6k ish!).

It is possible to register an STI V3 that was made before 31/12/96. I imported an STI V3 a year ago and that was made 10/96, so it required an SVA but no model report.

Thanks for all your help.

I think I finally understand now - and I've had all your info backed up by my mate (which gives me a bit more confidence in the fact that he does actually know what he is talking about!!!!)

So Ive definately decided to get a white WRX STi v3 made before 31/12/96!

Thanks again guys - I'll let you know how it goes!!
