Default Soaring temp gauge! Or could it be a GEMS problem?

Hiya,

Was wondering if anyone could help a damsell in distress?

I have a M98 STI Type R, which i had GEMS fitted to over a year ago.
I just had it re-mapped last week, and the car was running SWEET

Took the car out yeasterday, spent all day washing and polishing, then went for a spin...temperature gauge started to climb then shot thru the roof.
Was alright for about 10 mins then went climbing up. Blasted the heaters, make a small difference, but only just.
Straight back home, and got my brother to check over. He said nothing obvious. But the engine was ROASTING. Let it cool down then went back out again.
Had heaters blasting once temp gauge started to rise again. Cold air and no difference. Then just as we were heading home and the temp gauge was right at the top, heater started blasting hot air and temp gauge went back down to normal!

Anybody have any ideas???????? Baffled. Car felt fine. Apart from the obvious boiling engine and soaring temp gauge!

HELP!

only a guess, but sounds like there is either an air leak (could be a slight split in 1 of the hoses allowing air to be sucked in) or headgasket, or maybe a jammed thermostat.

I assume you have checked the coolent level, hense I didn't mention that bit

I would agree, check the coolant level is ok, or there are no air pockets in it. Cold air coming out of heater points to either that, a blockage or a faulty thermostat.

Default over heating

oh dear first check cooling level is ok
my car did this and i found the water was escapeing from the pipe out of the expansion bottle when driving
i fit a zero sport thermostat but the problem was still their
so i took the engine out removed the cylinder heads and found they were cracked this is most likely to be the problem. paul
