MY96 STi2
When driving along I have noticed a rather tinny vibrating sound - like spinning thin tin along the ground - that's as best I can describe it. Sometimes it more grating but others is just, well, tinny![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
No particular time either, when applying gas it happens, when slowing down without brakes or clutch, just taking foot off of gas, it happens and fairly loudly - when changing gear and accellerating it happens. I think it's something vibrating but dont know where to start looking as it doesn't happen when stationary applying gas.
Could it be the cluch on the way out?
I am pretty sure it's nothing to do with the turbo as this occurs before the turbo kicks in.

First thing to check would be the exhaust heatshields.
open the bonnet, look down just beside the radiator and gave the manifold a healthy tap with a broom handle. If they're the culpret you should hear them vibrate?
but then again it could be your brake pad wear indicators![Confused](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/confused.gif)
or detting like a bad dog and about to go bang in a big way of course![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)

LOL Elmer
I've obviously been using the wrong expensive oil ![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
I will check the exhaust heatsheilds.. I happen to have a broom
Brake pad wear indicators? It doesn't happen when I brake so it can't be that can it?
If it is the exhaust doodah's are they easy to fix?
It's definately not a pea in a can rattle, more as I said of a thin tin type vibration sound![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Thanks guys

As said already, could be heatshields which is most likely.
Rinky-tinkly sounds may also come from a catalytic convertor which is failing - the sound being the porcelain bits inside that have broken up. Have you been driving through deep water where the hot exhaust system and CATs have suddenly been subject suddenly to the cold water?

no they will have fractured and will require replacement or welding
i hit mine with a hammer to bend them so they would not rattle and left them for a while before the whole lot was replaced in the engine rebuild![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
i do not have a heatshield on my new uppipe

looking down, just in front of the airbox, you should see some exhaust pipey looking things
,thats were to start thwacking!.you'll probably be able to see just how corroded the captive nuts are.
I fixed them on my old 96 car by wrapping a large hose clip around the offending shield and said exhaust pipe.
the other alternative is to have them tack welded, break them off altogether,or buy some shiny new equal length manifolds

So, they can be removed without further damage to the car? The hose clip sounds like a good solution in the short term
Are you near Poole Elmer, my car is a 96 too so it would be a doddle for you teehee

OK... phone Triton and the conversation went:
'hi, it's Karen with the pink stripes - are you busy today?'
''yes, very busy but whats the problem?''
'I have developed this strange tinny vibrating/scraping noise'
''Tell you want, bring it up at 2.30 today and I will have a look for you''.
Off I go and arrive 2.30 as advised. Quickly mounted on the lift and bingo - heatsheild gone. Out with the welding mask and cylinder and a few sparks later following a short test drive Mr Vey handed back the keys and said ''right, on your way''. Upon wishing to pay I was told not to be so stupid as it only took 5 minutes![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
This is the kind of service we all expect yet some do not enjoy
Big it up for the lads at Triton Motor Services - they are situated at Hurn Airport in the Blue Zone and can be reached on 01202 571564.
