Experimenting with fuel supply for the old bug-eye it was discovered that popular to folks opinion that Optimax is ****e for the want of a better word. I stay near Aberdeen where it's 95.6pfor UNLEADED. Anyway, to stop boring you all, i tried a tank of BP ULTIMAX, SHELL OPIMAX and for good measure a tank of ESSO 97"****" as the geek said at the "sandwiches ar fresh all nite" type of place.

MY bugeye was exactomoondo the same as putting in UNLEADED fuel performance wise so all this crap that's typed about fuel ****e is ****E.

not being funny but if fuel economy is paramount, why do you own a scoob?

from personal experience though, i cant say that ive ever noticed milage differences in my car, but what i do notice is the greatly increased amount of knock i get with the BP stuff, the Esso stuff is better, Tesco 99 is also good, but that aint up there in sunny scotland yet.

 

also your saying that you only got 227-265 miles out of a tank on an unmodded Uk bugeye?

you must be ragging the **** out of it the get that bad economy on road use.....my car is modded and i still see 310+ out of an average tank....

 

Also if you are just trying one tank of different fuel after another, you are not giving the ecu enough time to adjust and economy will suffer. Takes a couple of tanks at least. I can get 350 miles out of a tank of optimax in my '03 wrx with mods. Optimax is also good for your engine as detergents keep your internals in better nick. If you have a bairn and are so fussed about fuel economy then you are better off with a diesel.

 

To be honest i never even look at how many miles i get out of mine. I just fill it up with optimax when its nearly empty

 

oh and one other thing......the bugeye is actually mapped to run fine on regular unleaded anyway....its only the 03> cars that suggest higher octane fuel....

 

There's a hell of a lot of abuse on there for a newbie. Not exactly the best way to go about using this forum I think.

 

One of the reasons why I use Optimax is the consitency in the fuel.

SUL-type fuel does apparently degrade with time, and on several occasions I've filled up at non-Shell garages only to find the car immediatelly runs like a bag of nails! Then takes a tank or two of Optimax for the car to start running properly again.
Never had a problem filling up with Optimax.

I don't think you have a particularly reasoned argument.....
Did you brim the tank on each occasion?
Did you add the same amount of fuel at each fill?
Did you drive the same roads in similar conditions?
Did you reset the ECU?

Of course people's perceptions are different, but facts - if stated - should at least be consistent.

fwiw my car actually feels "nicer" on esso 97ron
but its better protected on shell

 

Agree with above - most people on here IMO buy optimax for the octain rating (which is 98.6 and the highest pump fuel you can get in the uk).
It is best for imports and mofified cars to protect against det......not for fuel economy!

101RON only way, thats what im using now on my V4 Type R, after been using ****ty 95 and octane booster, 100 quid for 50 litres of 101 but ****it!!ha

 

FWIW, recent testing I have done showed no KnockLink activity with Optimax, but Esso showed "noise". Make of that what you will.

Only 227miles out of a tank of optimax? 60ltrs???
I got more than that last year in a 300+ JDM MY03 STi and that only has a 50ltr tank oh and even down to cirencester, id clobbered 180 miles on ONLY 30ltrs and that was at 80+mph

i've got a standard 04STi and i'm lucky to get 220
to a tank of optimax

tried BP ultima actually improved the smoothness thru the gears
and mpg but went back to optimax after one tankful!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It ran like a bag of nails for a while, but back to normal now

 

Not ever had one fitted to my car and it's still running fine - also went out and bought an A/F ratio guage after all the scare-mongering only to find that it show's the fueling to be rich on boost and normal on idle.... the way it should be.

Mind you I am having a remap done this weekend!! ...lol

 

Used to use BP's fuel, then moved to Optimax...car drives noticeably better and the detonation has gone to a minimum also..

Anyone know where down south is Tesco 99 ron fuel available?

280bhp and 280lb at the WHEELS according to Datalog Lab (estimate 360bhp at the fly).

Cruise at 3500rpm in 5th and some moderate WOT and I see 350miles to 53litres of Optimax.. town and A and B road only I see 300miles to tank.
Admittedly I have optimised the cruise area of the ecu map for economy but 200miles to a tank is well thursty.

Why does everyone compare how much they get to a tank?? It is unbelievably simple to get an approximate MPG reading. Average fill on my wife's 04 WRX PPP is 50 litres, which equates to a little over 11 gallons. This usually happens at the 240 mile mark, so therefore, just short of 22mpg. Pretty poor, but it gets at lot of town use, or when I drive it, it gets well and truly cleared out . Anyone that gets more than 300 miles (ie 28 to 30 mpg) to a tank that isn't forced to cruise along in 50mph traffic should check their throttle cables are adjusted right.

 

As mentioned before, why do people get so hyped up ....poor guy comes on here, airs his views, and gets slated to ****.

Ive got a 93wrx, my experience shows that mine runs better on Optimax - i get approx 10% more mpg - roughly 330km per tank, as apposed to 300kms per tank with normal.

What really annoys me, are the numbskulls that go on - if you're worried about economy dont buy a scoob. Ive wanted a scoob since i first saw one in a UK rally, the days of Colin McRae, i could never afford one. 5 years ago, i got my first scoob, and ive had it ever since ............. not all of us, have massive bank accounts, so fuel economy is important ..to me, thats when i use my car for company business, and im claiming expenses, when im out playing i dont car what the mpg is..... so why the **** shouldnt i own a scoob just because im concerned about fuel economy........ so to the guy that started this thread, ...dont listen to the single minded mouthpieces on this forum, enjoy your scoob, even if you want to squeeze every last mile out of a gallon.

As for optimax, i've been lucky enough to have several visits round Thornton Research Centre, were they do the tests on Optimax. For those who dont know, Thornton research or TRC, as it was, now known as Shell Global Solutions, is next door to the Shell Refinery at Stanlow, near Ellesmere Port. i have seen the test beds etc were they do all the tests. I used to mentor/ train their engineering apprentices. Optimax is 98.6ron, and it does help your engine, ive seen some of their test pieces, it does help keep your engine clean.

Shell wont guarantee its performance, and will merely say that each engine is different, and that it should improve things - 'my experience in my car says it works for me, i use it'.

Every one is entitled to their own opinion, and preference .. Except on scoobynet it seems.
