Default need help engine problems!!

Right getting F~~~ off with this now!!!! just replaced the turbo and its still has a problem running!

heres the story was out in the car (p1) and was giving it abit of a go! when i heard a hissing noise coming from the engine and a started to loose power (just after noticing that the boost was running in the early 20's). now it blows white smoke out the back and runs a bit chuggy and the turbo won't spool up properly! Looking under the bonnet the supply hose to the wastegate actuator was broken. This was a replaced but did not solve the problem! there is loads of oil in the intercooler and turbo air intake. when i take off the intercooler and run it, it still runs bad. oil spits out of the turbo first then subsides! however when i clean the intercooler and put it back on it seems to run fine for about 30 seconds then the same problem again! So i've replaced the turbo! still same problem"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what could it be!!???????????????????

you cant run your car without a intercooler and expect it to run nice

if oil is spitting from your turbo then its pretty safe to assume that its broke?
have you noticed oil spitting from your "new" turbo or you old one?

when you saw new, was it new or was it S/H

hi yeah the turbo is second hand but it has only done 1000 miles, i know for sure because it was from a good friend of mine who also has a p1. It was taken off to make way for a vf22!

I have replaced the old turbo with this new unit and its doing exactly the same thing oil "seems" to be coming out of the turbo!??

?????

Take the crankcase breather pipe off the inlet and see if that spurts oil out like the turbo?

Tony - I was going to say th esame thing. TOO much oil possibly. I might have said turbo seals but if the same thing is happening to the new one that rules that out!

Hi guys

hmm been through that possibility already dropped oil down but still same problem??? could there just be alot of oil in the manifold? Is it possible for the oil to leak through the turbo from exhaust into the air intake???

No not that one. If you look from the front of the car at the turbo, to its left you'll see a pipe coming from the engine block (crankcase). This then splits into two, one pipe connects to the inlet manifold undet the throttle body, the other connects into the inlet pipe. If the car is breathing heavily... i.e lots of oil coming out of the crankcase on boost then this will just go into the inlet pipe and the turbo compressor. This will then be spat out as you've seen.

So disconnect that pipe off the inlet (you'll need to block the hole it's left in the inlet or it will stall. Then go for a drive and boot it. If you come back with a load of oil dripping from the pipe you know its coming from there.....

Okay doak! i see what you mean! which hole should i block up, the one coming from below the throttle body or the one coming from the air intake? i think thats probably where its come from its abit oily in the tubes.

Whats the diagnosis if it is spurting oil from there doc?

Cheers chris

Block the hole in the inlet pipe/air intake and just let the pipe from the crankcase dangle...... when you go for a drive if its bad there will be oil all over the place from this pipe . If you don't block the hole in the air intake the car will stall, plus the turbo would suck in all sorts of ****e from under the hood.

If it is that... maybe the piston rings? Hard to say for sure. You'll always get some oil out of there which is why an oil catch can was suggested. this would catch the oil before it went back into the air intake.

is it possible then that oil might have been sucked up from the crankcase when the wastegate actuator hose broke? If so could there be oil (alot) sat in the manifold now and thats whats causing the problem? It went through half the oil in the engine when the problem occured. the engine runs fine once i clean out the intercooler, thats until the oil comes through and into the throttle body again! any way gonna give it a go! i will mail back the results!

I've got the exact same symtoms on my 99 turbo at the moment. I THINK i've blown a hole in no.2 cylinder. 0 psi in that cylinder. I'm stripping down the engine in the next week.

Is your car misfiring? Get your engine compression tested and see if that shows up anything.

IMO - Stop farting about and get a compression check done - then you'll know for sure that you have a holy piston

Quick reply... not that I'm technical in these matters.

First off check the condition of the plugs and get a compression test if possible.

It does sound like something's blown, probably, you've done in a piston and/or piston rings....

Have a look about in the dealers and third party suppliers pages. Might give you an idea of who to call and how much it'll cost, depending on where you are in the country and whether you can strip down the power train yourself.
