Default STI Intercooler swop advice please

Might have a crack at swopping my 02WRX i/c over to STI one i have got, how long a job is this and how involve is it.

Will i need any other parts other than the i/c and does it bolt into existing holes?

Many Thanks in advance

I'm not an expert, but I'm expecting my sti 8 IC to arrive this week. When fitted to the sti the IC has a cast y shaped bit of pipe. The wrx one is plastic. Not sure if you have the y supplied with yours. Someone posted some pics in a thread about this around a week ago. Also the flange underneath is apparently a bit different but can be bought cheaply. Other than that it should bolt straight on.

I'm hoping to have a look at mine in the presence of someone with an sti to compare fittings.

The underneath of mine has two metal tube thingys, going into a plastic y pipe, he kept the decent one for himself

So not entirely sure what flange you mean.

Cookie, if you have the two stubby outlets, then the plastic 'y' from yours should fit straight on, and it should be as easy as that really, the brackets etc are made to fit both intercoolers which is handy eh!! dumpvalve and pipework should be a straight swap too......

Easy peasy..! Ideally you'll need the matching splitter and scoop to get the best out of IC.

Or you could do as I did and 'adapt' the STI splitter to fit the WRX scoop. Bearing in mind that my WRX is an 05 with a bigger scoop than the <02 in which case the STI scoop would be advisable..!

Should be as easy as a 12mm spanner/socket and a screwdriver for the hoses!! don't quote me though!

You need the matching splitter to go underneath scoop in that case.

Are these the things you see on Ebay all the time for around £20, or would it be best to get the Scoop supplyer to recommend one?

It's just a straight swap, I did it on my own, but an extra pair of hands makes it a much easier job to do.

This sounds more straightforward than I thought. I should be getting the cast sti y pipe with mine. Does this mean that I shouldn't use it and just connect straight on to existing pipes. If I do use the cast y will I be able to fit it on with no other bits needed?

Angry

Not as easy as one would have thought.

Nearly two foofing hours to change an intercooler. Many cut/scuffed/damaged knuckles later

And im amazed at just how far i could throw a screwdriver, nearly eight houses down the road, my son counted them for me as i walked to collect it.

Done now though, but could only get one of the bolts back in one of the brackets, the one above the turbo just will NOT line up.

Rather than just undo the bolt fixing the IC to the holding bracket on passenger side, I take the whole bracket off on that side where it joins to the inlet manifold.
It gives more room to line the hoses up and wiggle everything into position.

Yeah thats what i thought, "wiggle" things into place, but it turned out more like levering things into place, everything was fine just that last ba$tard bolt in the other bracket, will get xtreme to have a good look at it when they change my up pipe and turbo
