Exhaust upgrade on MY98 - DIY job??
I've just bought a standard UK MY98 turbo. I've been looking on here for info about exhaust upgrades and found some good posts but nothing that quite tells me what I want to know.
I want to upgrade the exhaust so I get more power (not just a nice noise). On my previous car (Nissan 200sx) I had a full turbo-back exhaust replacement which was very effective. However, the same place has quoted me a GRAND to do a similar thing to the Impreza! I'm thinking that's a bit excessive!!
So, can someone answer these questions for me?
1. How many exhaust sections are there on a classic Impreza (after the turbo)?
2. Which of these has a cat?
3. I've seen plenty of reasonably-priced "centre sections" (some of them 2nd hand) - will this replace a cat?
4. If I bought a centre section and back box, is it a relatively simple DIY job to replace them? I'm no mechanic but I managed to replace the decat pipe with the cat when it came to MOT time on the 200sx and nothing fell off!
Please help! If I have to pay a grand for an exhaust, then I fear the mods to my car are likely to stop at some shiny pedals!!
Thanks.
Kevin.

the car has 3 sections after the turbo; down pipe with cat, mid section with cat and rear box. The mid section can be replaced with a straight through pipe and the rear box with any of the multitude on the market without failing an MOT, most of the work is done by the down pipe cat. Replacement of these two sections wil improve midrange response nicely.
loads of stuff available from www.motorsportworld.co.uk I've used them before for things and they are very reliable.
Also have a look at dyno.scoobynet.co.uk (link at top of page) to see what exhausts are giving good performance.
PS. if the exhaust is the original it may be a bit corroded together and need a bit of cutting to remove.

1K... no...
Do an ebay search. Pick up something like a Ninja for £100-£150
A decat center for £50-£100
DIY job taking 30mins for novice
Downpipe more involved ... but the center & backbox are simple.
