Default K&N Induction kit??????

Thinking of putting a K&N induction kit on my WRX, there only about £25 and seem to a straight fit on after removing the air box, is this right? Would it affect the MAF sensor?

Cheers

It's well known that I/K's kill MAF's on 98-00 cars, others seem to cope with them but you have to ask why you're fitting it ! They only work well if you supply a plentiful feed of cool air and support the unit well with good bracketing. If you don't, then the I/K will suck up loads of lovely hot air from the engine bay, potentially reducing power. It may also shake the MAF to bits due to the excessive vibrations these things tend to produce.
If you want to hear some induction noise and the OE recirc DV blowing off, remove the ram-air scoop and the resonator (inside the wing) and seal off the engine bay from the wing. Fit a free flowing panel (Green/JR Racing/K&N) in the OE airbox and seal around the entrance of that with some rubber hose. This mod ensures the engine gets lots of cool air and increases the induction and blow-off sound.. Best bit is, it's free apart from the new panel filter.

I was going to do the same thing - K&N induction kit on my classic MY98 (UK standard Turbo).

So first of all - where do you get a K&N kit for £25??? The cheapest I've seen is about £75.

Second, as to the vibrations wrecking the MAF - the K&N kit comes with a metal bracket. Would that be enough to stop it vibrating?

Corradoboy, that mod you've described is for a New Age, yes?? Is there a similar mod for the classic (I know you can get the panel filters), does it actually improve performance or just deliver the noise (I want both!! ) and does anyone have a diagram of what to do?

Thanks,

Kevin.

Default APS

I was thinking of the APS Induction kit. Ive heard its a very good one and less chance of maf problems. Anyone want to contradict or correct me on that ?

Only 4 things you have to worry about with induction kits with MAF equipped cars:

1) Water ingestion
2) Oil coated filters can coat the MAF sensor wires
3) Vibration
4) Large changes to angle and diameter of air flow BEFORE the MAF sensor.

Possible solutions:
1) Dont allow the filter to get wet or drive thru deep standing water (this one is mostly for the low mounted inner wing type CAI)
2) Use only dry type filters like the ITG and Green (I have a K&N but it is oiled very lightly <-- this is the correct way per K&N)
3) Make sure its mounted correctly
4) Use the same diameter piping, Keep the MAF in original location or have the car mapped to correct the MAF reading.

I personally wouldn't do anything to a 98 car with hotwire MAF as you're just asking for a £90+ bill

More details on the resonator mod HERE. AFAIK the classics have the resonator too, but not the ram-air scoop (what air this chunk of black plastic rams is a mystery, as the front of the bonnet is pretty well sealed with a rubber strip ) so I guess it's the same deal. Remove the resonator from the inner wing and block off the holes left to stop warm engine bay air getting in. Don't be tempted to use some ducting from a foglight aperture or similar straight into the airbox, as water will make its way in and do the MAF or worse.

Agree with the Green, but there is lots of bad history surrounding the ITG filters and I definately would NOT recommend one

Green, K&N or JR Racing (my favourite)

Speaking of it, if someone were to have a newage scoob, I still have my old set up. Its the factory air box modded with a velocity stack, HKS panel filter and silencer delete. This was what I consider ideal... and very sneaky! Too bad it wouldnt fit with my FMIC!
